Context is important in a poem as it is the base that the themes or the story being told is set on. Context could be knowing who the speaker in the poem is orwhat they are talking about, sometimes, a big detail is revealed later in a poem, meaning context is given later in a poem so the poem gradually makes more sense.

Lots of literary devices are used in poetry, one of which being metaphors. Metaphors are like similes in that they use two different things to compare similarities between the two, only metaphors will not use the words, "like" or "as".

One example of a metaphor from the poem "Still I Rise" is stated near the end of the poem, where the poet compares herself to "a black ocean", essentially stating she is a force of nature who will never stop fighting.

Poetic devices are a multitude of ways writers add to there poem to either make it flow better with devices such as alliteration or rhymes, or painting a image and connecting the reader to a story more with imagery or metaphors. Poetic devices are everywhere and really show the level of skill required to make a proper poem.

An example of a poetic device in “still I rise” could be the ABAB rhyme scheme that is prevelent throughout the poem or lines like “Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise”. Where rooted in pain isn’t necessarily meant literally but rather metaphorically.

It's a figurative form of speech, trying to show the pain words and judgment can have.
