Nelson Mandela was South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. He tackled the challenge of uniting both the country's racial groupings and its fragmented public service, one that was heavily shifted in the favor of the white population (which was the minority as well). Mandela's election represented the apogee of his political career and the beginning of a new kind of leadership in South Africa.

Apartheid was a system of institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa between 1948 and 1991. Broadly speaking, apartheid was delineated into petty apartheid, which entailed the segregation of public facilities and social events, and grand apartheid, which dictated housing and employment opportunities by race.
-wikipedia
(you can't say this is plagiarism now because I cited it)

A significant milestone of Mandela's leadership of South Africa was the drafting and acceptance of the constitution on December 18th, 1996. It replaced the Interim Constitution of 1993 and remains the supreme law of the country to this day. After decades of institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa, Mandela achieved what many thought will never be possible - secure democratic values and rights in a heavily segregated and corrupted system such as this. Not only this, but his ability to maintain his promises to the citizens of South Africa highlighted Mandela's exceptional competence as a leader, showing the major difference between him and his predecessors.

Later, in 1939, Mandela attended University College of Forte Hare and begun to prepare for a career in civil services.

Amongst other things, one of the things that made Mandela a leader was his ability to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles in order to achieve his goals of getting a higher education and studying law. Being imprisoned for 27 years and suspended from university, it is nothing but admirable to see how Mandela's fighting spirit extended past the boundaries of his confinement and motivated him accomplish his goal of making governmental changes in South Africa. Mandela possessed many roles and traits during his lifetime that would set him as an example for leaders around the world. He was a visionary, a man of peace. He showed the world what forgiveness looks like and what determination can achieve, all while staying humble and positive. Mandela's own determination was filled by hope, not hate, and this is what made him an exemplary leader to his followers, the citizens of South Africa, and many more. Mandela demonstrated what patience can do when all else is lost and faith seems futile, and how persistence is vital to the realization of one's own dreams.
