In school this year I was taught the meaning of diction in my English class for the book The Things They Carried. Tim O'Brien, the author of the book, used many forms of diction in his writing. This included short dialogue, long, descriptive sentences, and repetition. Diction was one of the reasons why the book caught interest to readers and it caused the book to have an unique tone.

Last year I once read a book called "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. Holden Caulfield is an unreliable narrator and showed unique diction in the book. This is because he makes many grammatical mistakes. This includes repeating the phrase "sort of" and "goddamn" very often even though they are not commonly used in formal writing. He also writes very long paragraphs that have little or no relation to the rest of the chapter. Finally, he showed a casual and rebellious “anti-phony” attitude that can seem controversial even to people today.
