    Requirements:
    1. Size: Minimum 5 inch tall or wide "vessel." 
    2. Texture: Covered in additive and/or subtractive texture that meets the theme of "organic." It can be non-representational in nature. Think: wavy, bumpy, coral, ocean like, etc. 
    3. Intention: All of your artistic choices should appear to be intentional. I have veto power over what is considered intentional -- as well as what is considered finished -- and may ask you to re-do certain sections if it looks haphazard or sloppy. Remember, some of the best sculptures have incredibly simple textures and patterns, BUT those textures and patterns are applied in a careful, patient manner. Don't over think it, but try hard!
    4. Risk: You are also graded on risk. Did you choose the easiest possible thing to do? Or did you push yourself to try something new or different. 

    First Steps:
    1. Ideas: Search for ideas -- go beyond what I supply. Screenshot images. Images of sculptures are the BEST resources (better than photographs). Gather at least 5 different images. 
    2. Plan: Create at least 2 different sketches. Ask your friends/teacher for their input to improve your ideas. Your sketch should also have a visual explanation of how you will make it. Ex: I will use pinched coils to create a wave-like texture; I will create the vessel out of coils, etc.
    3. Experiment: Start experimenting. Creating a "mini" version (you do not need to complete this).

    2. Texture: Is there appropriate texture? Should there be more? Less? 
    3. Craftsmanship: Is the artwork neat and created with care, or it is apparent that the artist rushed? Does it need to be cleaned up? Give a suggestion for where/how they can "clean up" their work. 
    4. Technical Soundness: Is the piece technically sound? Is it too thick; too thin, etc? Are there crumbs that will become sharp later? Is there trapped air?

    We will start with a mind map -- what does "grotesque" mean to you?

    Requirements:
    1. 5 inch tall vessel. 
    2. Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. 
    3. Your vessel should have at least one truly grotesque focal point. Crazy teeth? Missing eye? 

    First Steps:
    1. "Grotesque" Mind Map as a group
    2. Search for ideas -- go beyond what I supply. Post images to your column. 
    3. Create three sketches. Ask your friends/teacher for their ideas to improve your ideas! 
    4. Start experimenting! Troubleshoot! Creating a "mini" version (you do not need to complete this).

    Steps:
    1. Search (Pinterest is better): "High Relief Tile" or "High Relief Sculpture." Look around and see what you like. (I added a link to the Pinterest board)
    2. Find a Drawing/Painting: When you have an idea of what you might want to do, look for a drawing of it online. 
    3. Tips/Hints for a Good Search: You can search for "line drawing of ______" or "coloring pages of _______" in order to get appropriate results. We will be tracing some of the drawing onto clay. You must, however, add some of your own touch. Also...  Up to+40 points for anyone who uses their own drawing.
    4. Please post everything you like onto your column. 
    5. This project will be a step up from last year as, in addition to carving away areas (that's the "relief" part), you will also be adding clay to create more three-dimensional forms onto your tile.
