Concept mapping is a cognitivist instructional design tool that learning designers use to enhance the learning process. It enables learners to organize their thoughts by linking overarching concepts and sub concepts to developing ideas that further explains the concepts. This helps the learner to assimilate knowledge and information more effectively. The strategy was developed by Joseph Novak and his colleagues in 1972. Novak’s theory was influenced by David Ausubel’s assimilation theory.
