- Also known as " The Monkey Trial"
- Took place in Dayton Tennessee
   Butler Act - prohibited teaching evolution in schools in Tennessee
- 37 bills were passed to further support the act
- Started when a newspaper with an American Civil Liberties union advertisement that stated to give free services to anyone who would willingly challenge the new Tennessee anti-evolution act
- The towns higher powers thought a trail would generate people and income to the town, which then they decided to use John T. Scopes as accused in test case
- Lawyers where taken in for the case with the ACLU providing lawyers such as Clarence Darrow and other for a defense team and William Jennings Bryan to support the State.
- A rivalry between Darrow and Bryan was big during the court over opposing sides view of Religion vs Science.
-During the trial Darrow cross-examined Bryan which created more conflict which the judge was not in favor of.
-The court narrowed the legal issue to if Scopes taught his classes evolution than the bible´s view of Adam and Eve. (The defense agreed)
-Final Statement: The jury convicted Scopes and he was fined $100.00 
- The defense asked jurors for a conviction so they could appeal the law.
