Kodak. This is an example that I saw in their successful ‘hay-days’, they were extremely strong in film and cameras but didn’t pay attention to their external environment and it appears looking back that perhaps they didn’t consider they need to change because of the monopoly they had in the market at that given time – the technology as we see today crept up on them and the business no longer had the ability to offer the technology that overtook them, and their own offering was now longer wanted by the consumer.

So my example is both a success due to change and a failure due to not changing.

Back in the early 1990's, Nintendo was the number 1 console in the gaming world and when Sony Entertainment first started out, they had originally collaborated with Nintendo to create the PS1 to reinvent the game consoles, however during the collaboration, Nintendo pulled out citing that disc format would never take off for game consoles and that cartridges is what would flourish. However, Sony continued with disc format and released the PlayStation 1 which catapulted them to number 1 quite early on and have stayed there ever since. Nintendo tried to invent new consoles which they believed would rival Sony and the Playstation but most if not all have not been successful until 2017 in which they finally embraced change and released a new hand held console which has been quite successful for Nintendo.

This example is success due to change in how customers purchase items in some stores.

The Warehouse has been implementing self service checkouts to suit the demand for shorter queues for customers and also to drive efficiency when it comes to labour as a controllable expense to the business.
Keeping up with the need for change is important as it maintains the customers shopping experience to be positive and also helps maintain cost of doing business by being effecient
