Made students own their behavior and proactive rather than reactive approach.
RAH
That it is more productive to make homework relevant and less. We also assign 20 minutes of reading nightly. Kids enjoy selecting books they are interested in. I know as a parent we have had good discussions on books read.
RAH

I have always had a love for books that was fostered by my mother always taking me to the library and her love for reading was always evident. To this day my sister and I both share the love of reading she fostered. I take time each day to read to my child and we discuss what we read. I remember when I taught 5th grade and we had lit circles and I would read to my students each day. They would also have independent reading time and I would walk around and discuss what they were reading. I have begun reading a chapter of a novel each day to my students and then we discuss what we have read. Even some of my more reluctant readers are really blooming as they share connections with the novel. One of my students even was still telling me character traits about the chapter at last lunch time. It is crucial we try to promote a love for reading that goes beyond testing
