Dear Mom,
I have been working very hard. The war is tiring me out. General Grant has put me in a group of young men who are beats. One of the men in particular is so ill from his chronic diarrhea that he thinks he is a bird. He squawks like a Segall perhaps. I am absolutely fit to be tied. I think I have become ill as I have been having diarrhea as well. He is not trusted with the muskets and hornets. Me and my friend Grant carry the supplies. The other man in the photo is Grant, he has become my possum. We are very similar and share a common love for beaf jerky. Sometimes if we are lucky we will have an apple or potato too. My uniform has a hole in it. At your earliest convince, please send a housewife to mend it with. Let me know if their are any fresh fish enlisting. I hope we win this war mother, and I can go back to being a farmer and their will not be anymore slaves. I despise slavery. I think it is cruel and if we don't win this war then I don't know what I will do. I enlisted with the intention of ending slavery. I love you mom.
-Jack Cisa Lampell
