In "The Soul Selects Her Own Society," how does the soul shut out those she does not choose?

In the poem, the soul shuts out those that she does not choose by refusing to allow them into her life, or her “society,” in any way, metaphorically shutting her “door” to the rest of the world. She is extremely loyal in her commitment to the individual she selects, shunning all others. This reclusive nature was unmoved even by the presence of the emperor and his majestic chariots.

Infer: In "The Soul Selects Her Own Society," do you think the phrase "Values of her attention" is derived from organic things or mechanical ones? Why?

Though it initially seems as if the phrase refers to the valves of the heart, I believe that the phrase “the Valves of her attention” is clearly derived from mechanical objects, particularly faucets. This is because her attention can be compared to the water which flows out into the world from a faucet. However, the soul shuts “the valves of her attention,” so she ceases interaction with the rest of society and spends time solely with the individual she selected. On the other hand, the phrase “Like Stone” implies that the “Valves” were originally organic until becoming immovable and relatively mechanical.

What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The poet uses the images of the closed door, chariots stopping outside the soul's house, the emperor kneeling at her feet, and the closed valves of the soul's attention. The closed door and the closed valves of the soul's attention display the soul's seclusion, while the emperor and his chariots being shunned display's the soul's unshakable resolve in her commitment. There does not seem to be a unified pattern.

What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The main idea of the poem is the author picking one love interest and excluding everyone else. "To her divine Majority- Present no more" shows how she has an inner circle and she doesn't care about all the other people around her.
