This project, developed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore), and Chiba University, proposes a new tourism experience for Sumida, Tokyo.

Inspired by origami and Sumida’s historical connection to paper craftsmanship and printing industries, the project encourages visitors to explore local neighbourhoods rather than only major tourist attractions. Through field research, we found that many cultural spots and unique shops are scattered throughout the district, leading to the idea of a treasure-hunt-style journey.

Each origami sheet provides clues to the next destination, and collected sheets can later be assembled into a map of the visitor’s exploration. The reverse side introduces local history and origami instructions, transforming tourism into a playful and participatory cultural experience.

Abstract:

Global temperature extremes have increased both the incidence and fatality rate of heat stroke, and the majority of cases take place outside of hospitals, without the assistance of medical personnel.

People who work in manual labour ignore vital physiological signals and are unaware that heat stroke is happening, losing the crucial 30 minutes for rescue and risking permanent physical harm or death. The general public is unaware of the proper treatment for heat stroke, even though medical specialists can frequently recognise labour-related heat stroke rapidly.

With the development of technology, augmented reality (AR) technology has been incorporated into a variety of industries, providing the medical sector with cutting-edge applications in the area of emergency care. Medical practitioners can swiftly and repeatedly exercise their medical skills by using the advantages of visual medicine when augmented reality technology is used in conjunction with applications for clinical training and practice.

Numerous studies have adapted augmented reality technology into applications to help first responders make crucial ambulance decisions in increasingly complicated situations with a visual aid interface, improving the effectiveness of emergency care.

In conclusion, this study focuses on how augmented reality technology may be used to create an interface that enables members of the general public to obtain care for heat stroke victims as quickly and effectively as possible. This project adopts a Quality Function Deployment to develop a user interface for heatstroke first aid that will satisfy users' demands and design criteria. The user interface is meant to give them a quick and easy way to understand how to manage heat stroke victims before they seek medical attention.

By using a low-tech approach, the object forms a more intimate and sensitive interaction with its user.

Combining principles of physics and chemistry, the lamp recreates artificial natural phenomena within the glass chamber. Through a gradual and calming sensory experience, it gently encourages users to open themselves emotionally and slowly return to the rhythm of everyday life.

The warmth generated by the traditional halogen bulb provides a tangible sense of physical comfort, while its heat also activates chemical reactions within the liquid-filled shade, allowing the storm glass to continuously transform over time.

A spirit creature from the creator’s imaginary world is an extremely picky gourmet who only seeks out the very best food. With its enormous mouth, it remembers every delicious dish it has ever tasted. Beyond its love for fine cuisine, Fei Fei also enjoys sharing food with others, often stuffing its mouth full of treats to bring back to its friends.

Its three eyes never miss any food in sight, while its five agile legs quickly carry it toward every delicious meal before devouring it in one big bite.

The character design is inspired by the process of sculpting clay, expressing the limitless possibilities of form and creativity through hand-shaping. This reflects Shang Shan Cai Mi’s passion and attitude toward culinary innovation. The use of restrained, understated colors helps people focus on enjoying the brunch experience itself, while also conveying that Shang Shan Cai Mi values not superficial appearance, but the true soul and depth of food.

This phenomenon reveals a limitation of conventional circular economy models: while they focus on closing industrial material loops, they often overlook the wider ecological impacts of industry, creating tensions between distilleries, local environments, and communities.

Rather than treating whisky fungus as a nuisance, this project reframes it as a design opportunity. Positioned between industrial and social design, it uses a site-specific artefact to connect industrial processes with ecological awareness, making otherwise invisible flows of wind, ethanol, and time physically perceptible.

The outcome, Aero Foliage, utilises a parametrically textured Kappa-carrageenan substrate designed as a series of contemporary tartans. By translating the unique geographical and natural elements of different towns across Moray into physical topographies, the artefact encourages localised fungal colonisation.

As it gradually blackens in response to local microclimates, the artefact becomes a living record of whisky production. Moving beyond the product level of the circular economy, it extends circular thinking to the socio-ecological level, transforming industrial emissions into catalysts for ecological regeneration, cultural meaning, and new forms of coexistence within patchy landscapes.

C-BAT Circular Business Accelerator - 2024

What If

Design can more easily help customers in their circular transition strategy.

Why

Currently, most circular transition tools or consulting services are only affordable for large enterprises. The development goal of C-BAT is to address two major pain points commonly faced by designers before engaging in circular design innovation: 1. The expectation gap in project scale between designers and clients; 2. Companies' reluctance to invest or insufficient disclosure of internal and industry information, which hinders circular design projects from achieving their intended impact in business model innovation.

How

C-BAT integrates various technologies from multiple fields through design. By conducting a survey with 50 leaders from local small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, and performing in-depth interviews and UX testing with 7 local designers using product personas, we compare the current user experience of designers with clients' willingness to disclose information. This process is systematised and broken down into complete steps, with corresponding supporting tools constructed based on literature, to provide more comprehensive assistance in the communication process for designers.

Results

C-BAT digitises the service process to assist designers through three aspects: guidance, provision, and support. It leverages the advantages of artificial intelligence in key point summarisation and cross-analysis, enabling designers to conduct preliminary research with less time and cost. By integrating design with various technological fields, it allows design innovation to genuinely explore the core issues related to resource leakage.
