What was the budget and how did vertical integration benefit the film?

The film was produced by Universal Studio's and Legendary so they benefitted from vertical integration in the sense that their budget was bigger than it would have been if it was an independent film. However they didn't have full control as Warner Brothers distributed it. All aspects of the film were controlled over one of the six main studios.
The budget was $50 million and they made $201.6 million, which is a profit of four more times the budget.

Legendary haven't done many biographical films prior to producing "Straight Outta Compton". Whereas Warner have produced biographical films, this is why being a conglomerate is helpful for this film as Warner can support Legendary in the film making process.
