when researching I came across this image it stood out ot me because of the lighting.
I clicked on it to find out more information on the photographer but what I got was far better. It directed me to a youtube page by - Karl Taylor. He then breaks down how the photograph was actually taken, right down to the tricks of using gold paper to reflect the light. I've added his lighting diagram as well as the image.
This image wasn't just manipulated in post production. Here the glass was actually cut and the apple was stuffed inside as he explains.
I will add a link in the comment section and continue with my research for folio two.

What Are the Key Successes of Creative Manipulation in This Image?
- The key successes of creative manipulation in this image are with the positioning of the mirror and banana, the camera isn't shown, and the importance of the image is shown through the reflection of a rotting banana.

Comment on the Colours, Reverse Engineer the Lighting and the Concept of the Image.
- The colours used within this photograph are the colours blue, yellow and brown. Blue is used in this sicario for a sad or upsetting atmosphere around the bright yellow banana. With the bright yellow of the banana standing out the atmosphere is used to show happiness but is then contradicted with the brown banana in the mirror with having a feeling of dirtiness.
- The lighting is also reflecting off of the mirror to cause a shadow behind the mirror as well as casting a shadow of the banana within the mirror. The light also reflecting off of the mirror the light is being able to draw more attention to the yellow banana.

What was the Message Being Conveyed by Compositing the Two Images Together, and was it Successful?
- I believe that the message being conveyed is about someone's body image. The rotting banana represents how someone sees themselves as the banana looking into the mirror is how they actually look. This is a successful image because it shows how people's brains can track them into seeing something that isn't there.

This image was photographer by Mexican artist Paul Fuentes and I sourced this image from Pinterest. The key for this being a successful image is the combination of 2 very unrelated objects combined into one object. I am very impressed with the lighting in this image, the two objects blend together so well and are lit exactly the same, along with the angle. Many people looking at this image might think they are completely unrelated so did I but thinking about it more there is a metaphor behind this image. The mix between technology and food, this could symbolize how are society as it is now is drowning in technology ad internet, how most consume more of it than food.

The photographer of this image is Stephen McMennamy. I sourced this image from Pinterest. The key success to this image is combining 2 objects into one. Stephen has done this successfully with a spicy red pepper and a fire extinguisher. The colours of the 2 objects are almost identical making the blending of the images perfect as the top of the fire extinguisher replicates the top of a spicy pepper perfectly. The lighting is coming from the top right as we can see as it is the brightest part of the image and there are a few shadows at the left of the object, the shadows and highlights are perfectly aligned with each other. The message of this image is about spice and how hot it is and fire is very hot as well. Fire extinguishers put out the fire, put out the heat, so in this image it’s the correlation between heat in both of the objects. The message in this image is very clear and I find the photographer has been successful.

This image was created by Randy Lewis. This image was sourced from Pinterest. The key successes in this image is combining 2 objects to make one along with lighting and angles. You can see that the lighting is coming from above as the water at the top looks white in some places along with the shadow at the bottom of the watermelon. The blue of the background really makes the green and red stand out while the water blends into it. The idea behind this image is a play on words. Watermelon, water and melon. So the red juicy part of the watermelon has been replaced with just water with floating seeds. This makes for a much more interesting advert rather than a plain watermelon, the water also reminds one of the ocean and personally reminds me of summer and watermelon is an amazing snack to have during warm weather. I find this image to be very successful in the message it was trying to convey.

This image was took by the photographer Graja. I sourced this image from the Alamy website. What makes this image successful is the combination of 2 different objects and combining them into one. In this image an alarm clock and coffee has been combined, There are no shadows in this images but the top of the clock is a little brighter so I am assuming that a reflector has been used at the bottom to clear any shadows from the image. The angle of this image is shot from above originally (both images). Alarm clocks are mainly used to wake one up in the morning and many people wake up and first thing they do is make a coffee to get their caffeine to help them wake up and function. Mornings and coffee go hand in hand which is why i really like this image it's simple and it gets its message across quick and easy. And i would hope to maybe recreate this image or something similar in the studio.

This is another image by Stephen McMennamy. This image was sourced from Pinterest. The key successes that make this image was is the combination of 2 objects with similar colour and making one impossible object. The light is above the object as we can see there i a highlight at the top and shadows underneath however there is a part of the banana that is bright so i'm thinking maybe sheet of white paper used as a reflector has been used in that section to brighten that part of the banana up a little. I also think that the objects have been lifted off the back drop as this gives the photographer more control over the lighting and this also means that the background doesn't interfere with anything (also gives the look of the object floating). I find this image to be successful as the combination of the 2 images has been done very well from the colours to the lighting and angle of the image.

It's a clearly edited image and I think that the message that's being conveyed here could be either positive or negative but I also enjoy the uncertainty. It's either one having a big ego in a narcissistic, deluded way thinking they are better than everyone, or it could be someone looking at their self with complete confidence.

It creates a more appealing illusion to the viewer as it gives a sweeter way of showing which scent the soap is. I like how the pastel colours contrast well with each other as the blue background helps bring the donut forward more. The lighting in this image appears to be from above of what may be a softbox as there is a strip of light on the soap dispenser and a soft shadow at the bottom of the donut. I think the message of this image is showing how fast food and fast fashion/beauty are very much alike and this image is a successful way of showing it.

Out of the three images from Juliette Mainx's series this one has to be my favourite. Despite it being so simple it has a really good concept behind it and the two products work very well together. I like the bright yellow background as it draws the viewer into the image and contrasts well with the warm brown colour of the cookie. The lighting of this image appears to be from above at a slight angle as there is a tiny amount of dimension on the makeup compact with a hint of shadow. The white background blends very well with the cups which makes you feel like you’re in the kitchen but, some of the left top hand cup got a bit lost in the highlights of the white background so, a blue or pink backdrop might been more impactful.

(D) The shapes and colours involved in the photo suggest the picture is about unity but, the subject matter could also be referring to easy living and appreciating the every day.

While I was looking through some magazines for inspiration, I noticed how few of the models were wearing glasses, this led me to creating my collage about how the music industry views glasses. For much of modern western history wearing glasses was viewed with a very stupid stigma (mostly due to the "nerd" caricatures made popular in classic 80s movies), this attitude however, has changed more recently with the creation of the internet, as many of the people who have founded popular YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok accounts have been seen to wear glasses full-time. In my collage I sought to bring attention to how behind the music (and by extension the fashion) industries are by forcing models and celebrities who wear glasses normally, to opt for contact lenses for photoshoots and videos. I did this by attaching an oversized googily eye with celetape to an image, (this was to represent the contact lens being forced onto the eye) and covering the surround with wool where glasses would normally sit on the face, (this was to represent the softer alternative of glasses which are much less intrusive).

I sourced this image which is photographed by Sherran Stone from Pinterest. For me, the beauty in the image is the clear narrative and comment that she is making from the composition which is the world is like a bag of garbage- a waste. Additionally, I think the simplicity of the image makes it even more poignant. The concept of the image is that it shows the globe, but instead of the globe it’s a bag of rubbish. Suggestive of the idea of the impact of humanity on the environment. For me, when I think of the colour purple in the background- I think of extravagance which contrasts effectively to the rubbish bag in the foreground.

I sourced this image from Pinterest, this is photographed by Yuni Yoshida. The composition shows 2 bananas being held up by their peal like high heels. I find this photograph striking yet so minimalistic. I believe it is because of the usage of primary colours, red and yellow which really creates a beautiful contrasting, but also fairly comedic image. It is comedic due to its randomness- bananas wearing high heels. The colour of the background is a fairly flat red which makes it look like a red carpet- building on that idea the bananas look like someone’s legs on the red carpet. Furthermore, the shadow of the ‘legs’ look like they’ve been created from a photographer’s flash. As stated previously, the concept of the photograph is supposed to be comedic.

I sourced this image from Pinterest, this was photographed by Derrick Lin. The composition is so clever with a real, interesting concept to follow the idea that coffee is humanity’s batteries. The packaging and the batteries themselves are supposed to like batteries of coffee. Once again, we are seeing the combination of red and yellow to create a captivating composition which only helps to make it more contrasty. I think the image is successful in conveying its image- it's simple yet eye- catching.

I sourced this image from Pinterest, this was photographed by Paul Fuentas. Once again, this image is minimalistic yet eye-catching. The photograph shows half a banana connected with a tube of yellow acrylic paint coming out of the banana. In the background, there is a light turquoise colour which creates a usual atmosphere as it is an unusual colour combination. Compositionally, the paint coming out of the banana covers dominates the left side of the photograph meaning there is less negative space. While the right side of the photograph there is more negative space but also emphasis the curve of the banana. The concept of the photograph is unknown, but the photograph is eye- catching and therefore it may be successful in that motion.

I sourced this image from Pinterest, this was also photographed by Paul Fuentas. This image is like the one previous- as it connects 2 objects and puts it together into 1. The composition shows a soapy bar of soap with a wooden stick put at the end of it- making it look like a lollipop. The atmosphere around the photograph is light and almost airy- perhaps because of the bubbles on the soap, in terms of visual elements though. The colour also plays a part, the colour of the background is a light turquoise and is the same as the photographed I’ve analysed previous. Both the composition and the visual elements suggest a light innocence additionally due to the absence of shadows and light and subtle highlights.

- I chose the theme of my collage to be around body dysmorphia because I wanted to show how hard it is for people who have this mental disorder.
- I chose to do the collage on the back of a paper plate because I wanted it to be as if the person in the centre was looking at their reflection in the mirror and hearing voices as well.
- I used the colours dark purple, dark blue, and black because I want it the collage to portray a dark and negative atmosphere so that it conveys the theme well.
- I used the words from magazines and newspapers because these are words that people with this disorder here in their heads and also shows how they may be feeling.
This is the same with the words I made out of wooden letters.
- I used googly eyes on my collage because people with body dysmorphia believe that they are always being watched and judged when that isn't the case at all.
- I used a lollipop stick to cover the persons eyes because when they look in the mirror all they see is what the brain tells them and not what they actually look like.
- I covered the persons mouth as if they have been silenced because with mental health disorders people don't speak out in fear of being treated differently or they don't want to feel like an outsider, so covering the mouth represents not being able to speak out.
- People with body dysmorphia can often put on a fake face -like a mask- so that the people around them aren't worried about them even though they are containing their feelings inside.
- I finally added some dark blue textured paper under the persons eyes because I wanted to give the effect of someone crying and being overwhelmed with their own thoughts.

This photo was taken beautifully , I think the positioning of the photographer was great. The key success from this photo is clearly the complimenting differentiation of colours that are very striking. I find it interesting that by putting a light source in this telephone box and setting your camera to a slow shutter speed, you can end up with an image like this as the light fills the box. the photographer has a tripod with a slow shutter speed to make the light fill the telephone box. I think the colours are very complimenting of each other and it feels like a warm image in general. I also appreciate that the light from the box, also covers enough to light the sign beside it 'mill lane.' I sourced this image from -thephotoargus.com

I think the key success of this image is the subtly of it. I like the fact that there is a subtle light source behind this tent, showing the grass and also showing that the tent is empty. Well thought of image and good positioning from the photographer. The image is spooky as there isn't much information about it other than a tent in some sort of forest. This is also an overall cool image in terms of colour.

The key success of this image is how the photographer has used the painting with light technique to emphasise the pattern on the saw handle. He has used side lighting to really bring out the texture of it and make it the main focal point of the image. The colours of this image are mainly muted except for the warm toned chest the saw is sitting on. I especially like how the lock on the chest is also side lit individually which gives it a more three dimensional look. I like how his props are very old fashioned and rusty such as the saw disc which gives them a aged look which again brings out the textures more.
https://www.haroldrossfineart.com/still-life

This is a commissioned piece that Guy Ridgeway made for Hunter Street Books, Petersborough. I sourced this image on his website (guyridgewayphotography.com) I found this image extremely eye catching because it's composed very nicely with the antique objects. The colours of the books make the image pop and you can see that he really took that into consideration when choosing the books to put in the image. The objects are lit masterfully using the painting with light technique bringing out the character of each object by focusing on their intricate details and textures. Guy Ridgeway learned these techniques from Harold Ross and takes great inspiration from him.

The photographer of this image is Caryn Esplin and I sorted this image from her website https://carynesplin.com/table-top-light-painting-in-10-steps/

The key successes of this image are that she has correctly lit each object in a way that brings out the texture and colour best, also they way she has placed all the objects as it looks a little cluttered as most desks are and that they all relate to each other.

All the colours compliment each other in this image and relate to the concept "1940s Desk". As during this time it was mainly darker/earthy colours used. Also how each object has darker and lighter areas, this gives the objects much more interesting to look at and brings out the textures like how they type writer is smooth and the patterns on the hate and the old ruffed books, this also gives it a almost paint like look.

When you go on her website there is a step by step guide on how to make this image and images a like where she shows her set up and what equipment she used.
-she uses the sea timer on the camera
-she also uses a tripod to stabilise it and means every image is exactly the same so there will be no issues in editing
-she also leaves dark areas as I have mentions to give a. more artistic look to the image.
-The camera she used for this shoot is Nikon D7000.
-The sharp lens she used for this shot is Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AF-S G
-And on the tripod she used a Pistol Grip Head on Tripod.
-and the type of flashlight she used was Maglite XL100
- She used tape to create a "snoot on my light" as she says on her website, she done this so she could reduce the amount of light coming out the flashlight by pinching it. The type of tape she used was photographers gaffer tape.

I do seriously recommend going on her website as I found it every informative she goes into a lot of detail to much to write all of it she goes into her inspiration for the image and what I have said is a Watered down version of what she says

This image is excellent, I think it is very dark and creepy. The image makes you question where you are envisioning yourself in this photo. His key success here definitely comes from the eye catching tree which is separated from the darkness of the rest of the forest. It comes across to me like the tree that's emphasised in this photo is a somewhat safe point in this dark forest. Excellent job by the photographer. Dirck Ercken has a lot of similar work to this with the same vibe. I sourced this from Dirk Erckens own website - dirkerckenimages.com

The key success of this image is the use of painting with light technique in the background. It really shows the silhouette of the tree in front of it well, which makes it the focal point of the image. The light hitting the grass gives the image a pop of colour and highlights the bluebells growing in the grass. This gives the image an eerie feel to it as the cold colours makes you feel alone in this forest and the light coming from above makes it look like the moonlight shining down.
https://www.escapeintolife.com/photography/tim-simmons/

The texture of the fabrics (hat, scarf, and silk box) and the shadows around the flowers and beads brings out their shape and beauty.
3/4. The colours separate the photo into three sections. A brown/pink/yellow section, a blue/green/yellow section, and a red/cream/ gold section on the far right. This helps the image have depth with the darker colour closer to the camera and the lighter ones further away. The lighting is softer and further away on the jewels and harder on the scarf and hat, I believe this was to create the illusion that these items were under a window.

The warm colours of them gives the image a very hearty feel to it as these are all key ingredients for a nice meal. I like how each one of the red peppers appears to be lit individually from the right side as they all have a distinct highlight on them which gives the image a more painterly feel to it. I especially like the pop of side highlight on the left side of the garlic as it really brings it forward more so that it doesn't get lost in the background. The textured material also gives the image some depth and makes it more interesting to look at.
https://heidiegerman.com/introduction-to-light-painting-article

This is one of Harold Ross' Still Life's which I sourced from (haroldrossfineart.worldpress.com) This one stood out to me because of the colours, the blue tones in the bottle and background, the yellowy tones of the olive oiled the vibrant red/ purple tones of the shallots. The smooth textures of the glass that he has brought out by painting the light on brings a subtlety and calmness to the image and this could easily be a Rembrandt oil painting by how smoothly the textures and tones blend together using the technique, making this simple composition very beautiful. The contrast of textures is also notable between the rough ware and tear of the shallots skin and the smooth glass bottles. This contrast in texture makes the man-made objects and the natural objects very different from each other within the composition. Ross is a master of his craft and this is just one example of how he can paint with light to create a powerful image.

The key success of this image is how the photographer has used the painting with light technique to create a atmospheric type of image. He took inspiration from master painters and gave a more contemporary feel to it. I especially like the highlights on the fruit as it brings the image to life more and gives the fruit a very painterly feel to them. The muted colours of the background contrast well with the bright colours of the fruit, which brings them forward a lot more and instantly draws the viewers eyes to the fruit bowl.
https://www.nickchurchphotography.co.uk/articles/behind-the-shot-still-life-lighting

1. Harold Ross
2. A success was the depth of field the photographer managed to fabricate with light, as you can see, although not the focus point the sprouts are still pretty sharp in the back right hand corner, at first glance though they seem a lot more out of focus because of how the light was used. The staging of the objects was also a success as the the objects get gradually smaller and you can start to feel the scale/dynamics of them in relation to one another
3/4. The natural colours of the wood and food (brown/white/green/yellow) make the harshness of the manmade silver product really stand out, by posing this in the centre of the image it also brings attention to how unusual it looks in comparison to the other objects.
The light is fairly soft throughout so the light would've been pretty far away from the objects, I've mentioned the light on the sprouts but, its also worth mentioning the highlights on the greater which help bring it out as the "different" object in the picture. The shadows on an around the chopping board also help to bing out the grain of the wood as well as depth in the image

This image is by Harold Ross, a photographer who has experimented with painting with light for 30 years I sourced this image from his website https://www.haroldrossfineart.com/still-life

The key successes of this image is the texture, how he has lit them differently to bring out their different textures, the smoothness of the grapes and the bumpy shrivelled orange and peel.

in his process section of his website Harold talk about how he uses this lighting technique as it allows him to show things in a different light, he also talks about discarded objects, and when I think about how the orange actually would look I find that I would probably not want to consume it but with the way Harold had lit it it looks appetising. Also the plate looks very old which I find adds to the aesthetic of the image as the plate is still usable which correlates to the fruit, the orange is old and loosing its life but Harold has captured it in such a beautiful way and the grapes look like they are starting to go mushy but again Harold has captured them in such a amazing way that bring out the smoothness but also the soft wrinkled bits.

He works in a completely dark studio to allow him to control the light and its direction and with that u can paint the light onto each object. This kind of work also means opening the camera for a long period of time. With all of this the texture comes out and that is at the heart of his work.

He has a lot of different work on his website that find very inspiring and will be looking for similar objects for my work.

This image is by Scottish Photographer Tim Simmons, i found it on his website. I like this image as i stated before with a lot of the Painting with light images they feel very liminal and it more significant here. Firstly i am attracted to the walk path straight away as it is the only main colour highlight in the image. The fade of green to darkness contrasts very well together. Tim Simmons main goal was to create a scary creepy atmosphere and he succeeded

I especially like how certain parts of the image are lit up such as the bottom of the cowboy boot, the handle of the gun and the bullets. These three things being lit up from above emphasise the main objects of cowboy gear. I also like how the texture of the rope has been highlighted as it makes the image more interesting and gives more different patterns to it.
https://carynesplin.com/cowboy-gear-light-painting-featured/

This is a still life by Ed Phillips that I have sourced from (tpsc.com) This image works well as pretty much all the colours in the foreground are analogous such as the orange and yellow pumpkins, the yellow tea towel and the pale yellow heather and the background being the complimentary colour of blue to make those orange pumpkins pop. In terms of colour theory alone this is a very well composed image. The rough and worn textures of the objects brought out using this painting with light techniques really works in this. I like that even the background you can see the ware and tear makes this feel bit more authentic also like this could just be a table in some old victorian home or something. The lighting around the subject on the background makes the subject pop especially the shadows on the edges of the bowl that would be otherwise lost.

The lighting only shows you certain parts of objects like the books and clock, it lives a very quite atmosphere and I imagine this to be a desk, a desk of someone very old, closed off, smart who like puzzles and mysteries, I get this from the dominos scattered along the bottom and the magnifying glass and glasses with these old destroyed books that have been loved dearly.

He made this image by using multiple images of this set lighted in different ways. He also used the legendary 3 imaging sensor Foveon camera (a digital camera integrated with a laptop) in to his work and used it for this image. In this link there is a video where he talk about it more and how to light a set up in this moody dark. He uses photoshop to combine these images together.

1.Mark Hogan.
2. A success of the image is the emotion it evokes, through the choice of objects the photographer has managed to 'set a scene', to me this image is a snapshot of an old fashioned wedding, the white roses, old mirror and patterned fabric all evoke this, to others it could mean something completely different, but either way the choice of objects has an impact.
3/4. This image works with two colour palettes, a warm one (orange/yellow) and a pastel one (light green/ light yellow/white/ silver) , these balance each other out as the two yellows in addition to the silver and white blend, while the orange and green are contrasting each other.
The light is soft so would've been pretty far away from the objects the photographer has taken care to bring out texture in the rose on the right and leave the other ones looking more delicate and less detailed. The photographer has outlined the shapes of the objects with light on the background to bring you eye to them and keep your eye focused on them. The photographer has also taken time to light the front of the fabric leading to the objects, this was done to lead the eye to the set.

For this session we where tasked to split into teams of 4 and recreate/improvise stock image photos. I used a black background with 3 soft box lights (2 facing the backdrop and the main on the subjects. The camera settings I was suited with was ISO 100 I never change the ISO, Shutter speed was 1/125 and the f stop was metered at f9. I felt like what the main goal was to conduct posing throughout the images taken, and to be a great studio photographer is to be able to conduct the people you're working with and take authority.

In the flash with the umbrella image I should've put up the flash power as when I used the flash I put down the power as it was to much and was making my subject white and I didn't put it back up when I added the umbrella.

For this task we were getting more practice in using the flash and its attachments. The location I chose was at the 7th floor gardens. I picked this background because I felt it made the image interesting and gave it some depth. In the first image I used ambient lighting and had my settings at ISO 200, F8 and 1/80 sec to get the best exposure. In the second image I had my ISO at 100 this time F8 and 1/100 sec to avoid it being too blown out. I had the flash pointing directly above her head quite close. In my third image I used the umbrella this time at the same angle above her head quite close and upped the ISO to 200 again 1/80 sec and at F11 this time to get the right amount of light in my final image.
