OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a government agency put in place by Nixon. The goal of the agency was to increase the safety of the workplace. OSHA brought many health concerns to light, including asbestos and the dangers coal mining had on the lungs. Many believed that the government was overstepping when OSHA was passed but the justification lies on the premise that, “To the extent that the way goods are produced affects people other than the employer and the employee, the interest of those others may justify a role for the government.”

maclaury, judson. “The Job Safety Law of 1970: Its Passage Was Perilous | U.S. Department of Labor.” Dol.gov, 2019, www.dol.gov/general/aboutdol/history/osha.

Nixon changed his approach to foreign policy in the 1970s with the introduction of a realpolitik root. Nixon, along with the help of Secretary of State Kissinger, moved to push connections with the USSR and China. He did this as an effort to “thaw out” the Cold War. America wanted out so Nixon did so accordingly with as easy of an exit as he could make. Realpolitik was used by Nixon to not only benefit the American society but foreign, too.

“Nixon’s Foreign Policy - Short History - Department History - Office of the Historian.” State.gov, 2019, history.state.gov/departmenthistory/short-history/nixon-foreignpolicy.

The US relied heavily on the oil reserves of the Middle East. These oil reserves were controlled respectively by the nations the remain in. The US wanted to keep the oil reserve safe and supplying the American people, but that would come to be just the problem. The US sent monetary and military aid to Israel, but instead of the support being used for protection of the oil reserves it was used to attack the surrounding countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. This put the US in a difficult position inevitably resulting in the oil embargo of the 1970s.
