My favorite character from the book is Tally Youngblood, even though at the beginning I really didn't like her, the more the story was evolving the more she was growing and becoming someone that was important and valuable in the story. Of course she is the main character so logically she's supposed to be the "hero" in the book. But why then? First of all she is a normal and realistic character , she wants to be pretty, I mean who doesn't want to be pretty? At the beginning of the book, she doesn't really necessarily care about her friend Shay , because she has some friends already in the pretty side of the town, so at first she doesn't care at all of everyone else, she has one main objectives: become pretty and fast. What is interesting about the character is the way that she grow and develop during the book. The more the book advance , the more she will be conscious about her world, the more she will question herself and the more she will rethink; is becoming pretty's really worth? This is why this character is impressive, her whole mindset changed. Her whole perception matured and At the end , she will prioritize friends before her own beauty.

First, we can’t forget about the dilemma she gave to Tally. She put her in a very complex situation where she had to betray her friend. In filtrating the smoke or being ugly for life. It is true that Tally couldn’t accept staying ugly for a friend she met days ago. Even though, she made her betray someone she liked, and this is unforgettable.
TO BE CONTINUED

Two themes:

In the book there's a lot of simple theme for example: the "Appearance" , "Friendship" , "Identity" and many more. Of course I could talk about these two themes for hours, because the book is mainly about these ones. But I'm trying to extend what I could learn from this book and I will try to not use the simple one.

It is known that studying the past is the only way to understand the present and guess about the future. And as authoritarian governments often do, Tally's city controls information about the past so that people behave themselves in the present. And that’s why, in Uglies, the past may be a clue to the present, but sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what went on in the past. And how could some characters completely forget their past. See it’s a really strange theme, because we start the book without knowing the question “why”, “why” this whole society is made like that and “why” is that. The more the story continues, the more we question ourselves about the past of the characters, that seems more and more intrusting. The thing that is strange is that no characters really explains the past completely and we cannot know at 100% if it’s true. So, we jump in the present, and the whole story is made around the illusion of the past. Moreover, the book is made like that because without the past, characters cannot know what’s the right thing and what’s the wrong thing to do in their life, they have no real idea of consequences because the non-consciousness of the past made them completely blind. That is why when you take the past and the history of a society, the society loses his importance, because she can no longer lives by doing the right thing. That is why the fascism ideology is based on the idea of censoring everything from the past, so it’s more easier for the government to control the actions of the townsfolks and at the same time control their fundamental thoughts.

The second important theme is :

The main antagonist of the novel is obviously Dr Cable. An antagonist is someone who actively tries to get in the way of the main protagonist. This relation between the doctor and Tally is a perfect example for this definition. Since the beginning, Dr Cable stood on the young girl’s way to have a normal life. Everything started when she Blackmailed Tally into infiltrating the Smoke. Since, Tally had to betray her friends by going against their will to make them good and civilised people. (uglies that doesn’t want to change, to beautiful people.)

The two main conflicts in the novel are man vs society, and man vs himself. The fight vs the society could be represented by the government brainwashing people to act like they want to. Later in the novel, Tally learned that they put something in your brain to think that you’re beautiful. After that, she didn’t want to be a spy anymore. She is also fighting herself by not wanting to be ugly. She had to choose between staying the way she is or betraying her friend. Even if Shay always told her that’s she is beautiful the way she is, but Tally wouldn’t believe it. Just because of that dystopian society.

Victor Stip Moreau
(Protagonist)

To start off, let's define protagonist, the most simple definition is : "the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary work." which means that the protagonist in question is Tally Youngblood because she is the main character. So I would like to contrast and compare Tally to an other important character in the book; Shay. Shay is a really important character and still at the end of the book there's a lot of question that cannot be answered even though she seems like she has no secret or anything. First of all, she share a lot of characteristics and personality traits with Tally. They are similar in the way they appreciate both life and they both seems to enjoy life in a certain way, so they care about their future which is normal. But they also seems to like the idea of being against the pretty-system. They are both rebels that likes to break rules. This is really simple to understand because the plot is around this. But the thing that is difficult to understand is how they are different in a lot of ways, even though they seems not. The main difference is that they doesn't act for the same objectives , yes they both want to end the pretty-system, but not for the same reasons. Shay's against this system because she wants to protect her love David. She's in love with him , so she want's the best for him , therefore she is ready to sacrifice herself for him and fight the actual system. She's more a sort of "romantic-rebel".
Secondly, another important aspect is the social aspect behind the actions. They both had different path for their actions. Shay doesn't like to be pretty because of her friends, they also doesn't like the idea and does not support it. But Tally's different, all of her friends support the idea of being pretty. Like for example; Shay said she stopped making optional pretty faces when she was young. "But my friends and I stopped doing that kind of stuff a long time ago" , so she follows her friends , so she's not against the pretty-system , but she follows her friends. See that's a small difference, but at the same time it's a really big contrast which shows that the two girls may have the same objectives but not the same reasons.

I would highly recommend this book to every teenager that is 16-17 tears old. At this age you highly thought about beauty and physical appearance. This novel could make them think about it in another way. These aspects are getting more and more important in our current society. Therefore, it would be also interesting for them to read it. The story plot is good, and it is not only about beauty. There are other themes as Freedom and confinement, friendship and betrayal. The dilemmas are also very interesting to think about. The end made me feel kind of sad when Tally decided to give herself up to the authorities. I felt emotions where I cannot feel in an ordinary book, and I personally think that it is a crucial aspect of a good novel.

Victor Stip Moreau
Part 3 of the novel

The part 3 may seems like an ordinary part but it's pretty much the most important part of all. First of all , the part 3 involves almost all of the character in the book, but they also meet each other in various ways. The interesting things about this part is that you truly understand the ideas and the objectives of each characters and you also learn how they react to certain consequences. For example; When David learns that his father died, you learn how he reacted to it and how he tries to control his emotions even thought it's really hard for him. Or when Tally tells Shay that she betrayed the smoke and that a lot of things happened (arrestation) because of her. But the most important part and my favorite part is when Tally gives herself and confess to David and the authorities. This shows up a lot of the characters traits, Tally no longer wanna live with all these lies , she wants to fix everything. (I talked previously how Tally was an interesting character and I really liked to see her evolved during the book) and now she does the right and the most intelligent decision as a human being. Psychologically it's hard to keep all these lies in herself so she acts really normally, wanting the best for her friends and not only for herself. And this is why we see the development of this character, at first she wanted to be the most prettiest girl and was even ready to denounce her friend and then at the end of the book she wants to sacrifice herself for her friends (because she thinks that's the right decision).
