Macbeth was very nervous and hesitant to follow through with his actions. He wished for a sign to help guide him as an imaginary dagger appeared in his hands. He said to himself, "Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain" (II.i.45-47). The dagger then points toward the castle where Duncan sleeps and coats itself with blood. Macbeth accepts this as the sign convincing him to follow his ambitions and kill the king. After the dagger disappears, he hears a bell coming from the castle. Macbeth said, "The bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell That summons thee to heaven or to hell" (II.i.70-72). He is no longer feeling conflicted about his choices and is ready to kill Duncan. Macbeth's hunger for power is too great to lose this opportunity.

Macbeth is in shock tries to wrap his head around what he had just done. He realizes that because he killed Duncan, he is now going to hell. Macbeth heard one of the guards cry out for blessing. he explained to Lady Macbeth the encounter, "I had most need of blessing, and “Amen” Stuck in my throat"(II.ii.42-43). He committed one of the worst sins and feels he can no longer stand with God. All his life he has been training to be a good warrior and someday king. He was such a great soldier because of his loyalty to his fellow royalty. However, killing Duncan goes against everything he has ever stood for. He cried, "Macbeth shall sleep no more" (II.ii.55). Macbeth is traumatized and has to live with the fact that he destroyed not only Duncan but himself.
