We protect students from struggle. I plan on collaborating with regular ed teachers more to offer strategies as to how to best support emerging ELs with challenging passages/projects/presentations, yet keeping the rigor and expectations high. I can only imagine how difficult this can be for ELs who have strong work ethics, but the fast pace and unfamiliar vocabulary can impede comprehension.

Names!! I am so focused on pronouncing names correctly and using the students' correct names. My first year teaching ELL I had two students, AMY and BILLY from Taiwan and it made me crazy to use those names that a teacher had given to them!!! I had a tough time with XiaoHui, but I know she was happy when I finally said her name correctly. It seems basic but it's not always the case!

I wish the structure of our program at the junior high were different. I feel that the EB students aren't being given the opportunities for participation because there isn't co-teaching going on in most classes. The content teachers aren't adept at modifying lessons to incorporate opportunities for participation, and so many students just sit silently.
