  • Their eyes jerk, wander, and move fast from side to side (nystagmus).
  • Their gaze is not drawn to your face or an object.
  • They don't seem to look their family and friends in the eyes.
  • When a strong light is turned on in the room, their eyes do not react.
  • Their pupils appear milky or hazy rather than black in pictures, which you may notice.

A more mature youngster might:

  • get fatigued after gazing at things closely – for example, reading, drawing, or playing handheld games appear to see better during the day than at night appear to have crossed or twisted eyes or a squint appear clumsy – for example, they may frequently knock things over or trip.
