My name is Alma Hernandez and I am currently a student at ASU in the mental health and wellness counseling masters program. My goal is to become and LPC and work with children and adolescents. I would like to work on educating minorities about mental health and the importance of seeking help. From this course I would like to learn more about trauma to apply this in my future career as a counselor.

After reviewing the articles in the Unit 1 section I gained knowledge on mental health and statistics for the younger population. I discovered that over 60% of the youth that have a mental disorder do not receive treatment. This number is alarming as it is important that all mental disorders are treated as soon as symptoms are identified. Reading through the resources provided really opened my eyes as to how big of a problem mental health is and how important it is to receive treatment.

Reference
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In section 1- unit 2 I created an excel sheet with information on mental disorders. The excel sheet provided definition, causes, treatment and resources. After completing I learned more about each disorder and its treatments as well as the importance of early intervention. Additionally, I researched resources that could be helpful for anyone seeking information on each disorder. I found graphics especially helpful as they provide an illustration and clearer description of symptoms for a disorder.

Reflection: Developmental Discussion on Trauma Post 1

In the discussion on trauma I reviewed ACE's which are adverse childhood experiences and the types of trauma. The most interesting types of trauma that I learned about where primary, secondary and chronic trauma. Primary trauma is when an individual experiences trauma first hand such as suffering from a physical assault. Secondary trauma is when an individual witnesses the trauma. An example of this is a counselor who is impacted by a client recounting an assault. Finally, chronic trauma is when trauma is experienced over a prolonged period of time. This can be a child who experienced abuse during his childhood. After reading the discussions of my classmates I realized how important it is that everyone who works with children is informed and are able to recognize the signs of trauma. Understanding that everyone reacts different and copes with trauma differently is a key part of analyzing how trauma will affect a specific individual.

References
Robertson, H., Goodall, K., & Kay, D.

For posts 2-4 on the discussion on trauma I watched the documentary The Unabomber: In His Own Words. I had never heard of the Unabomber but was intrigued by the description of the documentary. After watching it I learned how trauma affects an individual, even an event so small during childhood can cause permanent effects. The Unabomber affected the lives of his victims and many around them. He suffered from trauma as a young child and in turn caused other trauma by his actions.
For Ted Kaczynski it was crucial to intervene in his early childhood to mend the damaged relationship between him and his parents. After researching the types of therapy that could have been used I came to the conclusion that parent-child interaction therapy would be a good choice.
Reading my classmates post I found a similar story in which a child was separated from her parents at a young age which caused a reaction of bad choices later in her life. It is essential that a baby and mother or caregiver bond in order to prevent any trauma which could affect them later in life.

References

Psychology Today.

The ABCD model of crisis intervention provides a series of guidelines as to how to approach a crisis intervention. The model is useful for using with patients who have or are experiencing any sort of trauma. The case study assignment was somewhat challenging as it required me to create a plan for a client. After reviewing the resources and doing my own research I was able to complete the plan and find treatments appropriate for the client. I learned that it is important to build rapport with the client in order to obtain the information to be able to properly assess and recommend treatment or referrals. Every client is different and will have different needs. After completing the assignment I felt my knowledge had grown and was more comfortable using the ABC model

Reference

Benavides, M., Berry, O., & Mangus, M.

The principles of psychology first aid course provided information on how to assist people after a disaster. I found this information to be extremely helpful and I learned several things from the course. One of the things that I learned about was how to identify individuals that might need to be assisted first. It is important that individuals who might be a danger to themselves or others are assisted first to avoid any further complications. Elderly or children who are alone should also be a priority as they are vulnerable. Overall, I really enjoyed the course and feel that this I can apply what I learned in my career.

Cultural competence is important when providing responsive services as it helps us cater to that individual. Every culture has different phrases, traditions, and practices and we must be aware in order to treat everyone with respect. Incorporating cultural competence into treatment improves therapeutic decision-making and offers alternative ways to define and plan a treatment program that is firmly directed toward progress and recovery—as defined by both the counselor and the client (SAMHA, 2016). Being aware of our own culture and learning and respecting others will help become a better counselor.

Reference

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.
