This is Dr. Nathanial Whitaker a newer Dean from UMass Amherst, coming to GCC Library (since I was in the event I couldn't take pics) to talk about race, which is a social construct meaning that we as a culture created the word, gave it meaning and rules- whereas, it really doesn't mean a whole lot without that meaningful association. In this case, race refers to differentiation based on physical characteristics like skin tone. He also mentioned ethnicity (alongside race) giving certain minority groups a challenge in being accepted within major schooling systems and governmental work areas like NASA. Ethnicity is a group of people with similar beliefs, or commonalities like religion to bring them together. My speech introducing him, is also included...

The Thomas theorem references one’s own reality, due to our perception being the identifier, and not something that another person tells us. Our interpretation of a situation causes an action and is not objective. When I see this road, I stop myself from walking the length of it, thinking about what could go wrong- so I don't walk it very far. It is a safe road, and that is just my perception of reality influencing my actions. Looking-glass self is when you base your sense of self on how you think other's view you. I worry that if I walk down this road and am unable to get back safely, others will see me as weak and scared, and then I feel less confident.

Thanks to the critical events (an event that causes a lot of societal notice) of George Floyd's killing and many homophobic acts of hate like the killing at Pulse nightclub, my home area has begun posting signs signifying a collective action problem (a group coming together to help raise the circumstances/or awareness of a societal problem) of ending Black brutality and mass hate killings of LGBTQIA+ persons. Across the river in Hatfield, there are counter movements (opposing viewpoints) quietly being hoisted up with Trump signage for 2024. These signs signify the beliefs (when you accept that something is true) that people of color or ethnicity (or sexual preference or gender or national origin) should not have equal rights and opportunities as people with white male European backgrounds. I am not posting that picture because the sign goes against my values (what ideas that I believe are best and most valuable, to live by certain standards.) For example, I believe in freedom of speech but not speech that puts other's lives in danger. One of my values is to be kind to everyone because you just don't know what they face daily.

Because of local farm abundance in my communities, no product/delivery is consistent, nothing comes quickly, employees are paid with no health benefits and only if weather permitting. This is the antithesis of McDonaldization. Also because there are so many markets and stands available, it deletes the need to involve big wigs who control most of the products on commercialized shelves. This negates the factor of elite theory of power (which is the control of a few individuals over larger systems like food we buy).

This is a fun farmer's market in Greenfield. This photo represents front stage, which means a public space that we are aware of having an audience. The farmers come out and champion their wares/foods and then if the performance was good enough, the customer will buy. What makes this front stage instead of back stage is the level of performance. In these stalls the farm helpers are always "on" and "performing" talking about where certain produce came from and how it is grown. Backstage is literally behind the tents where they keep their drinks and put their unused props, or personal stashes. This is also where they can get a moment out of the public eye and get some privacy or a moment to relax. The privacy is key to being back stage.
