She was born on May 2, 1729 in Stettin, Prussia, and ruled from 1762 until her death on November 1796 in Tsarskoye Selo. Originally named Sophie Friederike Auguste, she was born to a german general of serving Prussia. Her father’s elder brother was engaged to the Russian empress, Elizabeth. Elizabeth invites Johanna’s family to Russian in the hopes of making Catherine, her heir’s wife. She eventually married Grand Duke Peter, later known as Peter III, on August 21, 1745. Converting to Russian orthodox, she gained the title of Yekaterina, or Catherine. She became the empress after leading a coup d’etat against her disliked husband.</div>]]></description>
