Attendance is mandatory for this session, please ensure you are ready to present at 10 AM.

The morning will focus on you individually presenting your ACTIVATED RESEARCH to the group and being able to convey it in a short 3-minute presentation. Consider the following for your written work and presentation:

-         An overview of your chosen area of research that introduces you as a designer/maker.

-         Your individual position within your chosen area of research.

-         Examples of who else has explored this subject? Practitioners/historians/writers/researchers...

-         How and where have they done this? Websites/books/articles/films/podcasts/exhibitions/products/games...

-         A considered draft plan of how you intend to activate this research through your practice.

-         If you have developed a film based on your work so far, please make sure it is ready to play when you are called upon.

Remember that this is a presentation to give the class / your lecturers an overview of the direction and outcome of the processes of experimentation/research you have been engaged with over T1.

Please ensure any supporting materials are relevant to your intended outcomes and consider your audience and the limit on your presentation. We will be timing you.

The afternoon will focus on 1-2-1 tutorials with your 3 tutors to give direct feedback on the writing completed.

- Look at Barbara Walker, she does work around the Windrush: where she draws on huge walls. Her work is contemporary and how it is existing in society as she talks it out

WRITING WORKSHOP – WRITING ABOUT YOUR OWN WORK

Describe the piece you have chosen:

I was inspired by the work, especially in the Challenging The Narrative part of the exhibition. On entry, Sash Henriques shared ‘Science has, in the past, incorrectly linked behaviours and characteristics to the way we look. As a result, historical and current injustices are tied to flawed ideas of race and ethnicity.’ This part of the quote she left was interesting to me because I too feel like we live in a world where there are stereotypes and ideologies based on the past. Sasha Henrique then goes on to say ‘I am keen to understand and challenge these labels and support the cultural pride that helps us dismantle those dangerous and incorrect ideas’, this part of the quote in particular allowed me to understand the deeper meaning for the work which was shared in the exhibition.

The word “Medium’ is confusing. What do you mean? Can you be more specific? The Media? Print Media? Social Media? Magazines? Graphic Design?

I’m also wondering if it is the right question… or if you need to rewrite it slightly to suit the content of your essay.

So –

Could you work on the question / title.

Could you write a new, or rewrite the first paragraph. Try to introduce the title of the essay.

Perhaps this section of the essay should come earlier as it feels like this what the heart of the essay is about

Throughout my research journey, I have researched the different mediums that shape perceptions of black culture, identity, and experience. As a black woman, I have built both understanding to influence my design, and parts of my culture which has enabled me to know about my identity. From my findings, I can comprehend historical and contemporary challenges shaping the black experience, especially where the voices are silenced. During my research, I noticed the disparity in the representation of black female artists which made navigating references and ideas to influence my work challenging. As highlighted by Zipia, most female artists, unfortunately, aren’t Black or African American (see chart 1) (Zipia, Inc. (2022, March 10). So, as a Black artist myself I was becoming aware of the limited resources from those who have experienced what I am exploring first hand. I intended to use other black artists to see how they represent their community however, this resulted in being difficult

Both in the body of the essay, and then again in the conclusion.

Overall the language, spelling, and grammar of this essay is good. Your references are good. The structure of the essay and how it reads as a whole, could still do with some work. It feels like it is missing a body – or the main content of the essay.
