Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 18th, 1809 in Boston. His father left early in his life and his mother died when he was three years old. After his mom died, Poe went to live with John and Frances Allen (where he got his middle name).
By age 13 Poe became very talented in literature, and had began to write poems. But his foster father, John disapproved, and wanted him to follow him in the family tobacco business. Instead Poe went to the University of Virginia in 1826, and did well. But he didn't have enough money to cover tuition, so he turned to gambling. He ended up in debt but decided to enroll in West Point Military Academy. He did good academically, but was kicked out due to poor handling of his duties.

He was a defining author in the period of Dark Romanticism & credited with the creation of the detective story and the horror genre. His horror poems and novels inspired many later authors, such as H.P. Lovecraft, Jules Verne, and Stephen King.
