I think this movie really tackles the cultural conflict between the First-Generation and Second-Generation Asian American immigrant, and how both of them struggle in their own unique ways adjusting to life away from their historical homeland.

i watched this movie with my mom and cried super hard as well, even though neither of us are immigrants. i think EEAAO does a really good job to universalize the themes at the very end, especially with the planets colliding/hug motif: it feels like there are some things that the film decides are inevitable, which helps to ease some of the tension re: autonomy that we were talking about. like, even if you make all these different choices and take every different path, there are throughlines that connect every different version of yourself regardless of backstory/experience. in this case, it’s evelyn loving her daughter, but it’s easy to see how this perspective can be universal. i liked the idea that there are aspects of your identity that are so core to your sense of self that they would transfer to any version of you :)
