Please share your experiences involving families in supporting the needs of a child. Following are ideas of how to complete your initial post. Explain the scenario. Describe what went well. What lessons were learned? If you could do it over, what would you do differently?

I have a child with Downs Syndrome. She was referred to my facility by another provider because the family was moving. She wasn't quite 2 years old when she enrolled. An IFSP was already in place, services just needed to begin in my facility. She was doing OT at Physical Therapy and then Speech came to us. I have worked with other children and these services before. We would work with the therapist on the skills the child was working on so there was consistency in her learning. We have always worked one on one with the therapist. This child's mother was always rushing to get here for her appointments. When mom was present the child was easily distracted because she thought it was time to go home. After a couple of times, I had to ask mom to stop coming and explained that her child focuses better with fewer distractions. I have cameras in my facility and showed mom what I was talking about. I know mom was disappointed/hurt by my suggestion but as weeks went by and the child was gaining in her speech she was appreciative of my request. I think when working oneon one it is best to have as few distractions as possible. This will help the child to focus and reach their goals with success. I would and now do do the same thing. I suggest to the family as services are set up that we allow the therapist to come in and work with the child and teach us what we need to do to help the child reach the intended goals. I am happy to pass along information about the visit and progress of the child.

We have a child that is very shy. He doesn't really like interacting with anyone in the classroom besides his cousin who is also a student in the same class. We talked with both his parents asking things that interest him that we can incorporate into the classroom or lessons. We figured this would help him open up and talk more because it was involving something he was familiar with and interested in. It did the trick, it got him talking and opening up to other classmates and teachers. The lesson that was learned was that we can't add multiple interests at once because then he was going from one thing to the next in the class and wanted to focus on that and talk about that instead of listening and focussing when other topics were supposed to be the focus. It was definitely the right approach to get him to open up since he started school later than the rest of his classmates but it became a bit of a distraction for him. So I am glad we could make adjustments. Once he started opening up we did decide to take some of the things out of the classroom but still included things he liked throughout some lessons.

I really liked the idea of "staffing zones" I do use this strategy but never really thought it had a name. We have 2 teachers in my room. We know our duties pretty well, I also have communicated the duties to the other teacher well that she now knows what is expected. I do still have to remind when they talk to other teachers but she doesn't seem to mind and I need to make sure the children are safe. I liked the idea of laying out the zones and breaking them up, writing down visually of duties if a teacher may not be there to help guide the others. We didn't have zones we just knew if one teacher is in one area the other teacher needed to be in the other, same outside. I think having it visually layed out would benefit more so there is no guess work they will just know.
Another good reminder was making sure a teacher is around a child that can have challenges, this helps prevent behaviors or incidences that may happen. I think teachers can forget this as the day goes on and get wrapped up in other things but then something may happen and its to late.

In our preschool area, we have two main teachers and one teacher aid. The teacher aid is there to help the teachers if needed and help with the students that need more one on one help. We have a 4-year-old in our preschool that is developmentally behind. He often gets distracted easily and tends to wander off well the teacher is doing lessons. Having an extra person in the room helps keep him more on track as he needs more support and reminders to stay to help him focus. When doing group activities we make sure to put him into smaller groups so he doesn't get too overwhelmed. I feel this child reacts better when he is in a smaller group. Often he will get overwhelmed and need a break during these times we often go to the claim-down corner and take deep breaths or look at a book for a few minutes to claim down. I feel it good to have a claim down the station in every carry childhood classroom as children this age are expressing a lot of emotions. All the teachers in the classroom make sure to work together to be on the same page.
