When Lincoln became president, the South believed their economy would tank. He did not believe in slavery, yet the South needed it in order for their economy to work. They saw him as a sectionalist president, favoring the North only. Shortly after he became president, South Carolina felt that they had no choice. In 1860, that state seceded from the United States and formed the Confederacy.

In 1861, the 7 Southern states held a convention and elected Jefferson Davis from Mississippi as President of the Confederacy. They Confederacy cited the Declaration of Independence when it said "it is the right of the people to alter or abolish" a government that denies the rights of its citizens. They firmly believed that Lincoln would deny them the right to own slaves.
