A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller, and then impressed onto paper or fabric. An artist carves an image into a wooden plank using sharp blades and small chisels called gouges. Using repeated lines, they remove material from areas that will not be printed. 3D printing is not a traditional type of print because it is not an impression but more of a limited edition by the artist. The definition of 3D printing is printing in three dimensions from a design  created using modeling software.

Relief Prints are prints made by raised print surfaces with ink in contact with paper. The artist creates a matrix by cutting away all parts of the printing surface leaving only the area with the design. The design is considered to be "in relief" as it is at the original surface level. Various carving tools are used to achieve the design. Ink is then applied to the design area. The design area is brought into contact with paper through pressure. Voila! I remember as a kid I use to take leaves from outside and put them under paper and color over it with crayon, chalk, or colored pencil. I didn’t know it at the time but that was a form of printmaking.
