130 BCE - Discovery

The Silk Road trade network was discovered in the 130 B.C.E by the Han Dynasty. The trade route was a Eurasian route going from Europe to East Asia, similar to the Indian Ocean.

138 BCE-1452 CE - Silk Road's span

The Han Dynasty, responsible for the Silk Roads establishment, played a big role. Emperor Han Wu sent imperial envoy Zhang Qian to gather information about the other civilizations lands and goods from the west, officially establishing the Silk Road.

1453 CE - Fall of the trade route

Similar to the Silk Road mutual goods such as spice, silk, metals, and textiles were traded. Other valuable/luxury goods were gold, slaves, minerals, and jewels.

1500s CE - Fall of the route

Around in the 1500 CE, Portugal invaded the trade route to run the route for it's profit. Once Portugal invaded and failed to take over the route, the route would barely be used from then on.

Goods found in the Silk Road

Many goods found in the Silk Road included silk, as it is in the name of the trade route, spices, tea, ivory, metals, wool, cotton, and metals.

Differences and Similarities

While doing research on the Indian-Ocean and the Silk-road I came across some differences and similarities, similarities for both trade routes were valuable/luxury goods such as, silk, textiles, spices, and metals. The differences of both trade routes would be that the Indian-Ocean trade route would last longer than the Silk road. The Indian-Ocean only lasted longer due to the Silk Road being severed of the East and West by the Ottoman Empire

1497-1498 CE - Vasco da Gama

During his travels, Vasco da Gama sent an Arabian at Malindi before crossing the Indian Ocean around 1497. Later on the Dutch, French, and English followed the Portuguese through the route.
