Instead, it was developed over several centuries, with various contributions from different builders and craftsmen. The temple complex reflects traditional Thai architectural styles and has been modified and expanded upon since its establishment in the 16th century. Its current form is the result of extensive renovations and enhancements, particularly during the reign of King Rama I and subsequent monarchs.

Wat Pho is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok. It existed before Bangkok was established as the capital by King Rama I. It was originally called Wat Photaram or Podharam, from which the name Wat Pho derives. The name refers to the Bodhi tree monastery in Bodh Gaya, India where the Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. The date of the old temple's construction and its founder are unknown, but it is thought to have been built or expanded during the reign of King Phetracha (1688–1703). The southern part of Wat Pho was once occupied by part of the French Star Fort which was destroyed by King Phetracha after the Siege of Bangkok in 1688.

After the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 to the Burmese, King Taksin moved the capital to Thonburi where he placed his palace next to Wat Arun across the Chao Phraya River from Wat Pho. Wat Pho's proximity to the royal palace elevated its status to that of a wat luang ('royal monastery').

In 1782, King Rama I moved the capital from Thonburi across the river to Bangkok and built the Grand Palace adjacent to Wat Pho. In 1788, he ordered the reconstruction and renovation of the old temple site of Wat Pho, which had by then become dilapidated. The swampy and uneven site was drained and filled in before construction began. During its construction, Rama I also initiated a project to relocate Buddha statues from abandoned temples in Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, and various other sites in Thailand, and many of these removed Buddha statues were later preserved at Wat Pho. This included the remains of a very large Buddha statue from Ayuthaya's Wat Phra Si Sanphet which was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, and this was incorporated into a chedi in the complex. The reconstruction took over seven years to complete. In 1801, twelve years after work began, the new temple complex was renamed Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklavas in reference to the Jetavana monastery, and became Rama I's principal temple.

The complex underwent significant changes over the next two centuries, particularly during the reign of Rama III (1824–1851). In 1832, King Rama III began renovating and enlarging the temple complex, a process that took 16 years and seven months to complete. The temple complex was expanded to 56 rai (9.0 ha; 22 acres), and most of the present-day buildings at Wat Pho were built or rebuilt during this period, including the Chapel of the Reclining Buddha. He also made the temple complex a center of public learning, decorating the walls of the buildings with diagrams and inscriptions on a variety of subjects. 90  The inscriptions were written by about 50 men from Rama III's court and learned monks led by the Supreme Patriarch Prince Paramanuchitchinorot (1790–1853), the abbot of Wat Pho, a Buddhist scholar, historian and poet. On 21 February 2008, these marble illustrations and inscriptions were inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme to promote, conserve and disseminate the world's intangible cultural heritage. Wat Pho is considered to be Thailand's first university and a center for traditional Thai massage. It served as a medical teaching center in the mid-19th century before the advent of modern medicine, and it remains a center of traditional medicine today, with a private school for Thai medicine established in 1957 still operating.

The complex was renamed Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm during the reign of King Rama IV. Apart from the construction of a fourth large chedi and minor modifications by Rama IV, there have been no significant changes to Wat Pho since then. However, restoration work is an ongoing process and is often funded by the temple's devotees. The temple was restored again in 1982 in advance of Bangkok's Bicentennial Celebrations.

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like.

Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or

thing.

In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352), is

defined like in the following sentence:

Description is about sensory experience—how something looks,

sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description

also deals with other kinds of perception.

But in particular, the descriptive text is, “…… is a text which says

what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal

a particular person, place, or thing.”

So, it can be said that this descriptive text is a text that explains

about whether a person or an object is like, whether its form, its

properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the descriptive

text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an

object, either abstract or concrete.

Following the fall of Ayutthaya, King Taksin moved the capital to Thonburi, where Wat Pho gained prominence as a royal temple due to its proximity to the palace.

In 1788, King Rama I ordered its restoration, adding Buddha statues from various sites in Thailand. The temple became his principal temple and was renamed Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklavas in 1801. Under King Rama III (1824–1851), the complex was further enlarged, with the construction of the Chapel of the Reclining Buddha. Wat Pho was transformed into a center of public learning and traditional Thai medicine. Its inscriptions were recognized by UNESCO in 2008. Today, it is known as Thailand's first university and remains a hub for traditional Thai medicine and massage education.
