He describes the house by saying, "I know not how it was but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit...for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half pleasurable" (Poe 322). The house's appearance reveals the dark connection to the owner of the house, Roderick. It makes the reader feel the tortured and mystery of what lies in the House of Usher. 

He incorporates elements of Romantic and Gothic literature by also including bizarre events in the plot. He does this by using Roderick's past and family history. As the narrator travels to the house, as he gets closer the atmosphere changes, and he begins to believe that the area around him has a power on your mind, and his mood begins to change. The narrator plans on staying for a short visit of only some weeks, and as he travels he begins to think about the backstory, and the heritage of the family of the Ushers. Growing up the two had been childhood friends, yet Roderick would always keep to himself, "his reserve had been always excessive and habitual"(Poe 322). The narrator knew little about his friend yet still wished to travel and help him.

The family of Usher had a devotion to charities and wished to keep the family together without letting others in as they all lay in direct descent of one another. The narrator soon arrives at the once extravagant mansion to see how it has changed since boyhood. The once elegant house now stand dilapidated, surrounded by a lake in a surreal area as described by the Narrator. The Narrator describes the environment as though he is in a dream, and as he focuses more on the house, he can't help but focus on the "barley perceptible fissure" which made its way from the front of the house all the way to the edge of the lake surrounding the house.

When the narrator describes the mansion, “upon the bleak walls- upon the vacant eyelike windows- upon a few rank sedges- and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees-” the setting becomes mysterious, dark, and eerie.
