The Storm by Eminem

I was suggested by a friend to pick this politically charged freestyle rap from Eminem. The rap is a essentially a diss track on our current President which is something I can get behind despite my dislike for rap. In context however, this piece is extremely relevant because any media form involving the President is of import. In this case, it's all about what Trump has done wrong or what he is being a hypocrite about (as stated by Eminem). He reminds his listeners of what's really going on, not just people kneeling during the national anthem. He references the injustices that goes on in the wake of natural disasters and massacres but he STILL highlights the injustice among African Americans in America. It makes the piece much more respectable in my eyes.

"Since the 2000s, rapping has evolved into a style of rap that spills over the boundaries of the beat, closely resembling spoken English."

Thanks Wikipedia.
I don't like rap. That is because the main elements of rap which involve cursing and fast lyrics do not entice me. My main issue would also be the monotony of spoken word rap. The lack of melodic movement with spoken rap bores me, instead, I enjoy melodies that go up and down in wavelike structures to tell stories. With rap, one can go on an on very quickly to share their story, without breaks, and it's hard for me to follow it.

Rhyming

Many praise Eminem's rhyming skills; and damn he is good at rhyming. Eminem spits on those who say you can't rhyme orange with anything. I know in Old English plays and poetry, emphasis is placed on other syllables in order to create rhymes. They sounded unnatural to me but Eminem has talent to be able to flawlessly rhyme and enunciate where he wants to so that he CAN rhyme. He can also rhyme words with words that are supposedly unrhymable, so extra points for him.

Powerful Lines

I would say that the best part about rap is the emotion that is put into verbally saying lyrics. Eminem's lyrics are very clear and they make you think about what was just stated. They give a slap of realization to the face. In this piece, the line "That's why he keeps screamin', "drain the swamp!" ' cause he's in quicksand" is very powerful because it gives a reason as to why Trump acts the way he does, though fear because of "the fact we're not afraid of Trump". To me, it's a reminder that Trump isn't as powerful as he makes himself to be, it's all fear based, just like normal people experiencing fear.

Epic Rap Battles of History(yyyyyyyyyyy)

Still gotta involve politics on this page.
When I remember that this channel exists, it is my guilty pleasure to listen to it. While I dislike speed in rap (due to lack of understanding it) ERB has subtitles, and their fast rapping can inform listeners of historical content and facts. It's also very comical engages people in debate of "who won" and who will be next to perform in a rap battle.

It's Pentatonix guys, almost everyone loves them. This song goes in and out of melodic lyrics and rap lyrics. It's a great balance the two styles of singing and I find this tolerable. I must admit it's not my favorite song of theirs but their backdrop behind the rap sections bring it life and less sounds of monotony.

"So, umm, I got an erection today. I can't wait to choose my choice on election day!" -Lin Manuel Miranda

I have mixed feelings about this line from Miranda. Does it rhyme? Yes. Did he freestyle well? Debatable. He has the talent to freestyle rap on the spot with random words and I have to give him props for that. The line was funny and relevant because it's out of social norm to say "I got an erection" but, that's a quality of inappropriateness that rap has with curse words, lines talking about explicit sex with women, or drugs. I dislike rap songs with curse words (n-word, b-word, genital word, etc) but Miranda is right on the border of being too explicit but still funny in my opinion. After this musical rap journey, I can appreciate the genre more and be more open to it if someone wanted to show me a song, but I wouldn't really go out and actively seek it.
