There were a lot of people and groups that were either involved or influenced by religion in the 19th century. There were the Mormons, Abolitionists, Womens Rights activists, the Shakers, Transcendentalist, and Calvinists. The Mormons were founded by Joseph Smith who claimed to received revelations. They eventually headed west due to persecution and settled in Utah under the leadership of Brigham Young. Abolitionists were mainly inspired by religious convictions. They focused on the abolition of slavery. There were many in this group such as Harriet Tubman, William Lloyd Garrison, and Fredrick Douglas who were huge figures in this group. The Shakers were created during the 18th century but strived more during the 19th century. They mainly believed in communal living and were active in agriculture and manufacturing.

There were many reasons to why religion was a major movement and was significant, one of which being the movement of the Second Great Awakening. This movement was the revival of religion all around because people believed it was a way of societal improvement or social reform because of the way people portrayed it. They described the Second Great Awakening as a way of self improvement, emotional worship, and societal advancement. The movement tackled religious apathy and focused on convincing people to connect to religion to have a spiritual revival and have more self improvement in the world. In the short run and long run it did work since there was a rise of religion during this time and caused religions such as Christianity having an increase of people in different denominations and an increase in peoples beliefs in Christianity as a whole. The movement not only was an influence in just peoples beliefs, it also was a major influence in the political atmosphere extending into todays politics.
