First day in Saint-Jean-de-Luz by Helena Cardoso, Bárbara Marques e Joyce Dutra

On the 13th of October, we spent our first day exploring Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

First, we visited Lycée Maurice Ravel and we met some teachers and students.

Then, a teacher from the school took us to look around Saint-Jean-de-Luz and we bought some souvenirs.

After that, we came back to the school to have lunch, it was very good but also very different from portuguese schools.

Later on, we visited a castle, Chatêau Abbadia, close to Spain, a cliff and nearby beach to have some ice cream and some interviews for a school project.

At the end of the day we had dinner at our host’s house.

It was a wonderful day.

Our favourite moment on the first day was when we visited this church, because of its beautiful architecture and history. We learned that in this place Louis XIV married Maria Teresa of Spain in 1660. The boat hanging from the ceiling in this church was our favourite detail due to its random position.

On the first day, in addition to the visit and clarification about the school, we went to visit a castle of an old astronomer.After that we went to eat an ice cream at a place near the beach while some students asked questions about what we thought of immigrants and racism for a school work, and was mainly that.

So, on the second day the first thing we did was a presentation. Me and Inês talked about Gaia and Porto, and the other group of students talked about the art projects in our school. Then a quick Spanish/history class followed, but it was then interrupted by a quick ceremony for a teacher that was murdered. Afterwards, we all had a one hour break and then had lunch in the canteen. On this day we had all of the afternoon free. We explored the city, specifically a natural park next to a school. We spent a few hours there just hanging out and adventuring ourselves into the park. We loved it. It had some beautiful art pieces, statues, in various poses. When we realised that it was getting late, we left the park and went to the supermarket to buy some things to eat throughout the week. When we were all set, we headed back to the school, and then to our houses.

We started our day by going to the school to have two workshops, in the first one we presented ourselves,a little bit about our school and our country. Then we had a big break and ate lunch in school.

After that we went to a park and saw some beautiful statues.

On the way back to the school we passed by a art gallery with very amazing paintings and sculptures. When we got to the school, we waited for our host and had dinner with her.

On the second day we made a presentation about our work, school and country and we had a Spanish class.

In the afternoon we visited a park and walked through the streets of Saint Jean de Luz where, for example, we saw a very interesting art exhibition.

As we were walking through the streets of Saint Jean de Luz, we noticed that all the houses had the same three colours: Red, blue and green. When we got home we asked our "mother" why that was, and she told us that the people that live here are actually obliged to paint their houses with one of those three colours, just to maintain the city's style and tradition.

Third day in Saint-Jean-de-Luz - The Cathedral Sainte-Marie de Bayonne - by Joyce Dutra, Helena Cardoso and Bárbara

On the 15th of October we went by bus to Bayonne. There we visited Cathédrale Sainte-Marie. The cathédral in Bayonne was renovated by Viollet-le-Duc the same architect who made Abbadia castle or Carcassonne old town. The cathedral is characteristic of the Gothic style.

We found everything about it so beautiful and interesting.

A small curiosity about it is that the Cathédrale took 2 centuries to be made and got on fire twice before being done.

The Basque language

On this day we went to school to hear some presentations about Maurice Ravel.

Every group of students made one presentation or in spanish, french, english and basque. The one that got me more interested was the one where the students speaked basque. I had never heard it and didn’t know it was so difficult.

It’s very different from other languages.

In Bayonne the architecture it’s really different than in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. They are two charming towns in the French Basque Country, but in Bayonne the buildings are a bit more similar to Paris!

El día del viaje fue muy largo porque estuvimos en el autobús 14 horas, pero fue también muy divertido porque hablamos por primera vez con nuestro grupo. Por la noche conocimos a nuestra ”familia” que nos recibió muy bien.🥳

Third Day in Sant Jean De Luz

On the 3rd day we had a Spanish class with a VERY nice class, after the class there was a speech in honor of some teachers from there and then we went to visit a very beautiful and precious cathedral for the city (very well maintained), we walked the streets to get to know the city more and at the end of the day we all went to dinner together

Our last day in Saint Jean de Luz.

This was technically our last day because we were already going back to Portugal the next day. We started off of this day by walking along the shore of Saint Jean de Luz, alongside Pierre. At 10am we had to head back to the school cause we had to watch two short movies made by previous Erasmus students, and then a short debate followed. At 11am the headmaster of the school went to the classroom we were in to hand us our certificates of attendance. We had lunch in the school canteen, and given that we had the afternoon free, we took a few minutes to make a short video, and then headed back to our homes to pack our things. Since it was the last day, we had to do something special, in this case, we went out for dinner with all the people who worked with us throughout the week. In short, it was a very emotional day for all of us.

Out trip back to Portugal.

On this day, we all met up at 7am to start our journey back to Portugal. With tears of nostalgia and sadness we left France and all our new friends behind. We decided to make a shortcut to Bilbao, so we could go to the Guggenheim museum. Although we didn't get in, we were delighted with the statues that are exposed on the outside of the building. Afterwards, we headed back to the bus to make our way to Victoria Gasteiz to pick up the other students. We stopped at 12pm to have lunch, in a gas station. We all sat down at a picnic table and ate. 30 minutes later, we resumed our trip back home. We made a few stops after lunch, and then we finally arrived at our school. It was a very nostalgic but happy day at the same time. It was nostalgic cause we had to leave our new friends behind, but it was also happy given that we were able to see our family again after a week.

Hice nuevos amigos que hicieron el viaje aún mejor. Aprendí mucho de ellos y llevaré sus experiencias conmigo toda la vida. ¡Tengo recuerdos que nunca olvidaré! Muchísimas gracias por todo. Fue muy difícil despedirme de estas personas increíbles.
