THE FREEDMAN'S BUREAU

The Freedman's Bureau was a federal agency set up to help poor southerners and former slaves (freedman) after the Civil War. This agency was especially important during reconstruction, because people needed a lot of help rebuilding their lives after the war. Freedman were their main mission, and they needed the most help, since they had just been given a new set of freedoms with the 14th Amendment.

THE MILITARY RECONSTRUCTION ACT

The Military Reconstruction Act took place in 1867, when The Radicals had complete control of congress. It divided the south into 5 districts, the military being place in all of them. New elections were held, and voting was only allowed by the people that congress agreed to, most of them being African-American. Each district also had to ratify the 13th and 14th amendments, which not only outlawed slavery, but granted citizenship to all former slaves.

Hiram Revels was the first African-American to serve in congress. He served in 1870, and he was a senator. Without the 15th Amendment, He wouldn't have been able to be put into office, because most of the voters would've been white southerners. The 15th Amendment gave former slaves the right to vote, and that got him a congressional position.

RECONSTRUCTION: SUCCESS OR FAILURE?

Personally, I think Reconstruction was a failure, because to this day, not all races are treated equally. The Klan was still active after Reconstruction ended. I feel like the Radicals felt strongly about equality at one time, but I feel like it began to fade, and as a result, reconstruction faded as well. I feel like it was a failure because in the end, not everyone's life was rebuilt.
