The art disciplines that I will be using to communicate my ideas about emergence art are music and rhythm. To accompany the poem/song/spoken word, I would like to produce a work of art to serve as the cover of the mp3. My audience is femmes, girls, daughters, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, mothers and nieces. I want to communicate what it might sound like to ponder an essential question and have the answer emerge from within you. I have spent about a year wondering, "How did Comandante Ramona do it? How did Berta Caceres do it? How did bell hooks do it? How does Assata Shakur do it?" These are the women whose bands I would join. These are the women I would spend all of my time with. These women have taught me what friends have taught me as we have spent the last couple of years evolving. I just wonder what it would be like to listen to them and hear what they would do in certain instances that involve both deep pain and deep love for community. Their work has impressed me so much, I see them everywhere that I go, in everyone that I meet. I love living this way. This art/song/concept says, "What would the woman do, the femme do for her/their community and their children to live life unchained to cultural and systemic barriers? What spirit must emerge out of us and will I accept the call? Who will surround me, what will be the look in their eyes? My audience needs a place where they belong with each other and members of different, unique groups in the spaces we call neighborhood, office, and school. My audience needs care like they've never experienced it before. My audience needs thinking routines for processing their day-to-day lives, past, and what they have inherited from raisins and families. My audience needs constant love. I am a part of my audience just as much as they are. My audience needs art and access to art as a way to express themselves. As a part of my audience, fear might be self-doubt or the perception that others might judge the expression. A fear of my audience is also that even if they are to express what emerges from their heart, would things change? My audience needs to be able to do it anyway, to experience trying something out and working on it until they're are satisfied. My audience needs to have access to projects, small but sometimes large to experience a process. My audience also needs to feel safe as they experience an artistic process, and must have community support. This community support needs to be of excellent intention, careful reasoning, serious love, and with the ability to create boundaries. The possible barriers are that the purpose of the art goes unexplained, or ignored. There is a potential language barrier, because my voice emerged in spanish. There is a barrier of elitism, where I was able to learn about these liberation seekers because of the consciousness I grew after being politicized in undergrad. Gatekeeping remains a barrier, as well as how deep I can go. I intend to communicate a message inside of me that needs to emerge. I intend to communicate that I do not feel alone in expressing what has emerged, I feel as though many women and femmes can resonate with, "What matters?" I do not like that it is perceivably a monologue, but for the purpose of this assignment, my song might be a monologue. I take on different tones, and the intent is to bring harmony. I want to say that emergence happens when you feel and experience things every day. Emergence happens in lucidity, for me. I think being able to express emergence in song is a way for me to be vulnerable with my audience about the true expression of my heart, because in little ways its also informed by my life experiences. Growing up, songs, rhythm and hymns have always had an association with positivity. As I grew older, I noticed how out of different music, rhythms, and lyrics emerge sensations, desires, and persuasions. When I also ponder some of adrienne maree's work on emergence, I am happy to be a part of the people who still believe in how small interactions might have a ripple effect on the larger spiritual need of human consciousness and our connected heart. I want to start with the audience that represents me. I can only represent the social and cultural groups that I am a part of while continuing to learn about others, refusing to appropriate specific and profound cultural practices.

I like the prototype, but it is a personal expression of something that emerged out of me recently. I've received the feedback to include a translation of the lyrics from Spanish to English. Currently, this topic has become one of my top priorities, as I spend time with my grandma working outside in the sun. I want to be consistent in the way I show up for her. I want to be consistent in the way I show up for students, and my colleagues at school and work. I want to be consistent with myself. I hope that everyday small actions have a larger ripple effect and influence on our days to come. I would like to teach myself a little bit more about music to enhance what I currently have, as well as perhaps invoke a second verse with the same pattern I was able to identify.

In all honesty I am not sure what the final product of this project is going to look like. I started by painting, then I felt like singing. This week, I played with my sisters keyboard for about 30 minutes. I did not create a final product. I did have fun. I would like to re record the lyrics of the emergence song with my sisters microphone. This week, I also spent time practicing the song as if I were to speed it up. I practiced and came up with new lyrics on the spot. These lyrics address other women in my family, and the women in their families. They are still my audience. I would like to create music, I need to spend more time recording my keyboard sessions and other patterns I come up with in my head that might be similar to drums. Then I will need to layer these sounds. I hope for a final product that I can be proud of.
