Ajaveun :

King uses a fancy technique called antithesis to back up his argument for breaking certain laws. He basically sets up a contrast between two types of laws: the fair ones and the unfair ones. He asks, "How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?" Then he explains that there are just and unjust laws. By doing this, King is saying that it's important to challenge unfair laws and fight for justice. It's like saying, "Hey, not all laws are created equal!" This technique helps King make a strong argument for breaking certain laws.

In paragraph 16 he says “A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God.”. He argues with the two by sayin “An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law.” He agrees more with a just law. I would agree more with it too. “Any law that uplifts human personality is just” this is from paragraph 16 also.

King uses statements like "How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust?" This sentence helps show how he was thinking of this topic for awhile. Later on, King also states "An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law" which helps us understand his viewpoint on what he considered an unjust law. Furthermore, King states in his letter "It is morally wrong and sinful. Paul Tillich has said sin is separation." King uses statements of other historic people to justify his reason to break the law for peace. King uses antithesis to justify his reason to break the law in order to create a world in which his fellow brother and sisters are not discriminated against.

King use antithesis in these paragraphs to support his argument for breaking certain laws by contrasting laws and unjust laws “Now what’s the difference between the two?” “How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust?”. Unjust law meaning unfair. He states “ An unjust law is no law at all”. He contrasted these laws because they were cruel and yet unfair to African Americans. The unjust laws were laws to keep the black and whites segregated. As for the just laws they were for everybody. With that being said the words unjust and just would be our antithesis to support his argument for breaking certain laws.

Through antithesis King makes it known that the moral necessity of his cause and the injustice inherent in certain laws. In paragraph 16, he brings up just and unjust laws.He makes it known of unjust laws and strengthening his reason for disobeying them. This continues in paragraph 17, where King compares laws that uplift people with those who degrade them. He speaks on this to support for challenging unjust laws in race of justice and equality. He now highlights the moral view of the entire civil rights movement.”An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself. This is difference made legal. By the same token, a just law is a code that a majority compels a minority to follow and that it is willing to follow itself. King uses the phrase “ An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law.” This statement helps the reader understand what kings point of view of an unjust law is and how he contrasts and compares the laws. Furthermore , the use of the question “ How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust?” Helps the reader wonder and ask themselves how much time he had to wonder about what was “just or unjust” meant to him. Lastly, the statement “ Is not segregation an existential expression of man’s tragic separation” helps us understand that king might be emotionally effected by segregation and wanted to express that.

-litzy mejia

He basically says how some legal laws people don't agree with so people basically take it into their own hands. In paragraph 16 it says How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A law is a man-made code that squares with moral law or the law of god. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. It also says Hence segregation is not only politically, economically and socilolgically unsound, it is morally wrong and sinful. Thus it is that i can urge men to obey the 1954 decision of the supreme court, for it is morally right and i can urge them to disobey segregation ordinances, for they are morally wrong. In paragraph 17 it says This is difference made legal. by the same token, a just law is unjust law is a code that majority compels a minority to follow and that is is willing to follow itself this is sameness made legal. - Sheena Smith

In paragraph 16 and 17 King uses the words “Just“ and “unjust” as an antithesis to show and explain how Unjust defines that whatever someone does is not right or out of code. King explains in paragraph 16 “ any unjust law is a human law that is unjust” and further Explains that “ any law that degrades human personality is unjust”. In the same paragraph he then explains what “Just” Meant explaining that “ A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God” meaning a just law is a fair law. So my opinion is that i think King uses the words “Unjust” and “just” to support his argument for breaking certain laws Because he knew the laws were unjust and tried to do what was just which meant breaking a few laws.

-Justin Crawford

When he said, "Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust" I heavily agree. Think back to JIm Crow laws, which separated black people from white people by behaviours and what they are/aren't allowed to do. "All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality." This proves that people grow angry, complacent, learn to avoid spaces and pass that knowledge unto their children. We should not have to be afraid of the world.

The use of antithesis shows how just and unjust laws aren’t really different.King supports this by stating “An unjust law is an human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law,While An any law that uplifts human personality is just”.He continues this argument by stating “All segregation statues are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality.King states all of this to support St.Augustine’s statement that “An unjust law is no law at all”.I feel as if that I would agree with Dr.king on his statement bc I do feel as if unjust laws and just laws are equally as damaging to a persons personality .

He explains how unjust laws ones that degrade human personality, while just laws uplift humans. He later says that the majority compel the minority to follow a law that binds them whilst not binding them. That was as he described difference made legal. They make the laws to where while the minority are chained in a sense, the majority are free to do whatever they want. So By breaking these unjust laws it is in a sense showing respect for the law.

-Guston Cook
