"To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time."

I think of remembering the dead is what keeps us in the present and respect the ones that have passed. The humane thing to do is to hold services and visit the graves of the ones we love. In the book when they were killing people left and right, Elie says that death had become the norm for them.

"That was when I began to hate them, and my hate is still the only link between us today."

When I read this passage I think of humanity a lot, when being treated with bitterness and hatred you have no other emotion to give than hate back. The awful things they did to them like throwing them out of their homes and building their trust then betraying it he has nothing else to relate to with them other than hate.

"How was it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and that the world kept silent."

This quote really made me think of humanity because Eli was questioning it himself. How could in our civil world today let that happen, who was letting this happen? why was this happening? is it going on all over the world? All questions I guessed were going on in Eli's mind.

"Bite your lips, little brother... Don't cry. Keep your anger, your hate, for another day, for later. The day will come but not now... Wait. Clench your teeth and wait."

This passage stuck out to me a lot, even though everyone's first emotion and instinct is to hate and revenge he reminds him that they are still god-loving humans, they do not know why this is happening but remember to do the right thing and obey, the time will come for their rein, their peaceful revenge will come.

"One more stab to the heart, one more reason to hate. One less reason to live.”

I still wonder how Eli did what he did, and how he can openly share his life and experience at Ashuwitz. We as humans are taught to love, to give, and to have sympathy. But no one talks about how to deal with a broken heart. Society tries to turn away from non-positive emotions but the truth is we all feel them at one point or another, sometimes we want to give up, we want to feel hatred sometimes we fear the pain is easier than the joy. We are all humans, we all feel the same emotions but it's how we react to them that changes our world.

To what extent are we all witnesses to history and messengers of humanity?

Our stories help us become who we are, the way we react to situations, and deal with those traumas we encounter. Throughout our daily lives, we refer back to historical events and how they shaped our society today, they've taught us lessons that teach us how to be better humans.

A part in the story that stuck out to me was when Elie told us years later when he was in Paris he saw a women throwing coins at poor children and he told her to stop for he knew the feeling those children felt scavenging for anything, the teasing and joy the women got from it hurt him he couldn't understand why a women would willing do that. There will always be hate and in justice in this world, but even something as little as children fighting for change, to holocaust prisoner killing each other for one bite of food it all has the same background. Learn to join together give, instead of take, listen instead of accuse, that is what makes a society worth living it and to be proud of.

In the novel's beginning, you see Elie as a shy, sensitive, and emotional boy. When going through what he did, seeing the horrors he saw, losing his family, and seeing other families being torn apart, he himself changed along with his beliefs. He learned to fend for himself and not to show his emotion and lash out no matter what, whether it may be anger, sadness, confusion, or even happiness. He became this shell of a man, numb, but the lessons he learned helped him and others understand life more.
