I decided on a forest background, with wolves in the middle ground and Romulus and Remus in the foreground.  I decided to use oil paint on canvas.
To make sure I didn't make a stupid mistake early on, I first began with a minimalist pencil drawing of all the key elements I wanted in the painting (the footprints in the foreground and some of the trees were improvised).  I then put down a base layer of white on the upper left and lower right wolves, as well as on the ground.  I went over the wolves with white, brown and gray oil paint, and used red and black on the red and black wolves, respectively.  The ground I covered with brown, and used darker brown to illustrate footprints.
The last thing left was the babies themselves. I also started with a base layer of white, so as to get an appropriate skin tone. I mixed more paints and filled in their bodies, using black marker to distinguish their limbs so that they appeared to be more than just blobs of flesh.
