Realism, what's it about?

Realism was a revolutionary artistic movement that began in France during the 1840s. The goal of the Realism movement was to intertwine the real world with the paintbrush. Considered by many to be the beginning of the modern art era due to everyday life and the current world being suitable subjects to be portrayed as art. The Realists of the 19th century concerned themselves with the way life was structured socially, politically, economically, and culturally. This concern with these certain aspects of life led to unsettling portrayals of the appalling moments of life. They often used dark earthy palettes that opposed the beauty ideals of art at the time. This is because Realism was the first clear-cut nonconformist movement that challenged the social customs and values of the rich who controlled the art market at the time.

Realism came about from a time in the 1840s when the beauty of a piece of art in Europe was decided by a single committee known as "Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The reason for this being is the academy was situated in France, which at the time had a very prominent presence in European culture. This meant that the academy had a very strong say in what could be considered an acceptable piece of art. Through all this though France was beginning to have many revolutions in the country. One of these just so happened to be Realism, which aimed to go against the Royal Academy in what could be constituted as an admissible subject for a piece of art .

This painting called "Rue Transnonain" was painted by artist Honoré Daumier. The artist attempt behind the painting was to denounce the monarchy in France for an obscene reaction to the killing of a police officer in a riot. This painting is demonstrative of the beliefs of realism because it denounces, the traditional idea at the time, the monarchy of Louis Philippe I.

This is a painting called "A Burial at Ornans", it was painted by artist Gustave Courbet. This painting is representative of Realism because at the time it was painted, a funeral was not a very suitable subject to be painted. Especially not one of unknown people because paintings of this scale were reserved for historical events or people. This painting is representative of Realism because it rejects the traditional idea of these types of paintings being reserved for only historical events.

This painting is meant to depict poor workers hauling a boat upstream. It showed that the Russian spirit could be strong at times when it was needed.

Huckleberry Finn follows the end of another story of Mark Twain's called "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". At the end of the book Huckleberry Finn finds a stash of gold that he places in the bank held in trust for him. Huckleberry Finn is adopted by a widow named Douglas. As a result of this Huck is having trouble assimilating with this brand new life of his. But Tom Sawyer tells him to get used to it so Huck can be a part of his gang. Huck's father was quite abusive so he decided to fake his death and escape to an island. While out on the island Huck encounters a runaway slave named Jim. They then both head down the Mississippi river intending to stop at the mouth of the Ohio River. However they miss the river and end up encountering a group of men who are looking for slaves that had escaped. They continue down the river and run into a steamboat that ultimately separates Tom and Huck. But they reunite later and continue down the river. While going down the river Huck and Tom run into some con artists who are running away from armed bandits. They rescue the con artists and continue traveling with Huck and Jim.

There are many themes contained within the story of Huckleberry Finn but the most prominent one is Slavery/Racism. It is one that is brought up in the book many times throughout. And is one that got the book banned for a period of time for being considered a racist text because of its use of the n word. Another theme in the book is guilt and shame. The widow Douglas teaches Huck morality through the use of religion. There are many instances throughout the book where Huck is questioning the morality of the decisions he has chosen.

Huckleberry Finn Literary Devices

Many literary devices are used to great extent in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". One of which is the point of view of the narrator. The POV of the narrator drastically influences the way a story plays out in a book. A first person book is an account of a story from just a single person. Meaning there are details that could be missed out one because of the nature of the first person narration. Another literary device used in writing is tone. The tone of a story is dependant on what kind of story the author is trying to tell. For example a fiction book about cats in space may have a less serious/realistic tone than an autobiography written by a War Veteran. The author's purpose ties in with the tone based on the fact that the purpose of a book determines the kind of tone the author wants to emphasize in their writing. An author also uses dialect to flesh out the way they want a certain character to be portrayed in the story. For example the author may want a certain character to use more cuss words or limited vocabulary to indicate that that character is uneducated or rude. Finally an author uses symbolism to make a story have a broader interpretation of it's meaning. For example an author may choose to include an object and or character that can be interpreted to have many different meanings to different kinds of people.
