Module 2.1- CLASS activity "ETHICAL or UNETHICAL?" by Nunavut Sivuniksavut

Create a research project scenario using some of the guidelines and practices discussed in module 2.1. You will either write about an "unethical or bad" research scenario or an "ethical or good" research scenario. Make sure to use different examples in you scenario. When you have finished, you will post your scenario on the Padlet below. Then, you will read and decide whether your classmates' scenarios describe an "ethical" or "unethical" research situation by voting thumbs up (ethical) or thumbs down (unethical). Finally, you will comment on ONE other student scenario to tell us what is ethical or unethical about that student's research scenario.

He has received approval from his university to do research in the community, has filled out and accepted a research permit from Nunavut Research Institute, and has worked with community members to make sure the research topic is relevant and beneficial to the community. Billy Bob packs his stuff, heads to Grise Fiord, and begins work on collecting oral histories. Billy Bob has brought his friend along to set up the technology to be able to record Elders' stories. Billy Bob wanted to be sure he was able to speak with the Elders, so he hired a translator from Iqaluit to also join him. She has received funding from the European Union to do research about glaciers.

She's very fascinated about glaciers and the oral stories of ice and is curious to learn about dog sledding and how Inuit understand ice and glaciers.

She took off to Pond Inlet for a few months and during these months she interviewed hunters and elders. After months of interviewing and living the Arctic dream she heads back to Denmark. When she published her paper, she did not credit the hunters or elders by name. She won an award for her excellent research in an Arctic Researchers contest and became a very well known glaciologist.

Peta from University of Ottawa was studying climate change around Canada. He was invited by the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut research Institute to go and study the climate change that is happening in Nunavut. The community he was to research in was held in Cambridge Bay, NU at the CHARS building. He and a few other students from different institutions were invited to go and do research. They had never been up north before and had no clue what to expect. The NRI had provided hunters, elders and interpreters to join their research on out the land, Government of NU had also made sure to include IQ values within their research. Ikajuqtigiiniq was included in the research, having a meeting with the community to listen the community members thoughts and opinions on what they think about climate change in Nunavut. Their main study was on ice, to keep track on how fast the ice was melting during the spring. With the support and knowledge the hunters and elders had provided for Peta and his team made the research a lot more easier. The research is still in process and they are invited to go back to Nunavut during the summer to continue their research.

Norman had great interaction with the local people, and held a community feast and meeting for what he is doing in Sanikiluaq. During the meeting, he had mentioned that he will be selling his research to a different research group from University of Seattle. The local people didn't agree. Norman told them that the University of Washington is not going to sell the information about the research. Norman went back to Washington and sold his research.

He joined Public Service Anouncements on Facebook for the communities within Baffin and asked around what he needed to do legally. He was told to go through the NRI (Nunavut Research Institute) and he did. Cotton-eyed Joseph went over to Nunavut and talked to the NRI, and was told what he can or cannot do. Once he got to Baffin Island, he conducted research. All went well and he studied the population of these caribou without even touching them, he just followed their paths and observed when they ate, let go of their waste and monitored their sleeping and migration patterns for 3 weeks. After finishing his research on the land, he camped for a few days o enjoy the view not far from Kimmirut. Before his trip he stole pop because he didn’t want to pay for the ridiculous prices. He littered his garbage after finding out the landfill is already not taken care of very well anyway.

Rocket the scientist was doing research on rocks and foils in Nunavut to see what can be sent into space. He found soapstone, a smooth metamorphic rock, which he thought was perfect for space. He found more rocks on Inuit land and thought, "no one will use these rocks, I'll just take them." But Inuit had been using these rocks to make qulliqs to cook and heat their igloos and summer houses, and for carving sculptures to tell stories and used them as important symbols. So Inuit saw Rocket and told him off saying they need these rocks, and Rocket understood and kept what he had and left the rest behind. Rocket left to test the rocks in space and never went to Nunavut again. Many years later Inuit began to hear about the man on the moon, and they saw a picture of him with a rock. The same rock that was on their land.

Rocket didn't give any information and where he took it from.
