Summary

The article ‘How 3D Printing Could Revolutionize the Future of Development’ begins with a short definition of 3D printing which is also known as additive manufacturing and its potential in society, medical field, businesses, disaster and outer space. Next, this article states that 3D printing could help the countryside population by providing them with sufficient goods. Thus, 3D printing is able to support the fight against hunger and by providing enough food to the earth’s population using the cartridges that are easier to transport and could be stored for a long time. In addition, 3D printing is also able to reduce the rate of homelessness in the future as it could support home construction with the lowest cost so that everyone can afford to own one. Furthermore, 3D printing is capable of transforming humanitarian response and modern medicine. It permits the workers and stakeholders to easily get the tools they need to recover from a disaster scene such as an earthquake by utilizing a 3D printer in customizing a pipe necessary for sanitation in a short period. Other than that, 3D printed artificial hearts can also be made by a 3D printer to save a patient’s life as well. Lastly, the author also mentioned that 3D printing could protect our planet in the future by converting the wasted materials into a new item. For instance, converting carbon dioxide into concrete and using algae-based filaments could reduce the energy necessitated for the printing process. As a result, our society would have efficient consumption and the sustainability of natural sources could be ensured for future generations.

The article “The Importance and Potential of 3D Printing” talk about the benefits of involving 3D printing in various industries such as drug development, automotive industry and space exploration. As for drug development, 3D printing eases the production of drugs, it offers manufacturing collaborations and the medicines can fulfil patient’s demand at a lower cost. Second, in the automotive industry, more energy-efficient components were developed. The result of the weight of components that are produced by 3d printing is lighter than the one that undergoes traditional manufacturing process and it can be accessed from medium-sized companies. Lastly, AM is newly found in space exploration. AM allows the astronauts to recycle waste materials into reusable items which are low-priced.

The article ‘Medical 3D Printing: How 3D printing is saving lives’ shows that 3D printing brings many benefits in the medical field and becomes quite helpful in lots of aspects.3D printing makes it possible to customize prosthetics hands, arms, and legs to help the one who depends on it to live a normal life just like how they dream of. It also has a low cost and can be fully adapted due to the patient's condition, to their routine and their disability compared to traditional prosthesis.3D printing also can help with bone refinement such as 3D printing for jaw reconstruction, breast reconstruction, knee realignment and 3D printed synthetic cartilage for knee replacement to save lives especially for the elderly because it was less risky than the traditional procedure. In recent years, 3D printing provides us with brand new possibilities from 3D printed braces to 3D printed dentures, dental implants and crowns. With this technology, the molding process can be avoided and the implant can be done faster. So, the dentist can save precious time for his patients. Moreover, 3D printing was used to create the real replicas of the heart, spine or any organ part of a patient that surgeons can use to practice on before performing complicated surgery. This technology also can be used to explain its complications to the patient. Thus, the patients will have a better understanding of what is actually happening and how the doctors will overcome the crucial part of the surgery. Aside from that, 3D printing also helps professionals from the medical field to discover new solutions and try new medical treatments. 3D printing can help treatment testing by using bioprinting which enables the printing of real human skin. In this way, it is possible to test new drugs without having to test it on animals. Lastly, 3D printing can be combined with cancer treatment. The printed model of a tumor can be tested for different drugs and the purpose is to eliminate the risky and unsuccessful drug testing on the cancer patient.

The article "What Is Medical 3D Printing—and How Is it Regulated?" discusses that 3D printing is an additive manufacturing technique that creates three-dimensional objects by building successive layers of raw material such as metals, plastics, and ceramics produced from a digital file, rendered from a magnetic resonance image (MRI) or a computer-aided design (CAD) drawing. Manufacturing of 3D-printed medical products is based on a patient's imaging data. The FDA regulates the medical products made via 3D printing. Devices are classified into three regulatory categories, or classes. Class I devices are low risk; Class II devices are moderate risk; and Class III devices are life-supporting or life-sustaining. 3D printing presents unique opportunities for biomedical research and medical product development. Questions remain about how FDA should evaluate and regulate point-of-care manufacturing of 3D printed devices. The agency may need to define a new regulatory framework that ensures the safety and effectiveness of these products.

These four articles provide us a clearer picture and understanding of what the future looks like if 3D printing is developed effectively. The potentials of 3D printing are not just focused on the medical field but also society, automotive industry and even outer space. We agree with the prospects of 3D printing that have been mentioned in these articles and we think that it could make drastic changes and improvements in our future life. Our hopes are similar to Anjan Contractor’s hope that his 3D food printer will be able to support the earth’s population which is increasing year by year and then the social hunger issue will be reduced via utilising the 3D printer which produces food with the highest quantity but the lowest price. Hopefully the 3D printing technology has the ability to treat the illness that we cannot treat with the technology right now. For those patients who are eager to have a replacement of an organ like heart to save their life, we think 3D printing is the best solution to overcome this problem. With the potential of 3D printing, it is believed that the cancer disease can be treated using it as well. As a result, the rate of death in the world would reduce because of the use of 3D printing and it could be the stepping stone for the medical field to leap to a higher stage as well. There are lack of information on the negative effect of 3D printing in these articles. Therefore, we agree that 3D printing technology should be developed and introduced to all human beings nowadays as its advantages outweigh its disadvantages which we should not turn a blind eye to.

However, we realise that 3D printing requires higher technology knowledge and machines and certainly it needs a lot of money to develop it that some of the countries are not able to afford as it needs professional human resources and also stable financial chains. The in-equilibrium technology situation would happen in the future if the stronger country always moves forwards but the weaker country would always stay behind. Thus, the modern country which is capable should give a favour to those small countries in terms of sharing technology in order to realise the wish of 3D printing could revolutionize the future of development but not only revolutionize certain countries. As we know, the global goals can only be achieved with the cooperation of all the human beings in the world and could not be accomplished by one man’s effort. Unfortunately, these articles lack solid suggestions to tackle this issue to convince the people nowadays to totally agree with the potentials of 3D printing in the future and then bring up this technology together in the future.
