Carnival. Caribbean economies, being small in structure, depend heavily on tourism. The carnival season produces much income for these economies as tourist from all parts of the world come to invest their foreign currencies and participate in the masquerade as well as carnival fetes. Also, local citizens mass consume for the events as hundreds of dollars per person are spent on “feteing”. This allows for development of private sector industries. Carnival season allows for people to come together and have a good time despite their tribulations.

In retrospect the post-colonial era, women were viewed as the care givers and men to be the wage earners. Though this view is still present today, the role of women has been evolving. This dancehall artiste seeks to advocate that a man cannot use her for sex because she is strong mined, independent and successful on her own. Today we see many women in high positions in society and thus breaking the glass ceiling effect. Women are now being more educated than men and so they are able to obtain substantial jobs and provide for themselves and be their own ‘breadwinner’.

African slaves were brought to the region against their will to labour on the plantations by the British colonisers. Slaves journeyed from Africa to the Caribbean on a ship via the middle passage. The Middle Passage refers to the part of the trade where Africans, densely packed onto ships, were transported across the Atlantic to the West Indies.  The voyage took three to four months and, during this time, the enslaved people mostly lay chained in a row on the floor of the hold or on shelves that ran around the inside of the ships' hulls. While there was a steady loss of life through suicide, most of the deaths were caused by disease brought about by the unhealthy situation in the ship's hold. For me, this course was very interesting. I enjoyed and greatly appreciated the fact that lectures were held online. This innovative way of learning allowed me to direct great attention towards the learning objectives. Not having studied much History throughout my school years, this course has immensely broadened my horizons. Learning throughout this course was quite a shocking and mind piercing experience. I was amazed to find out that the appropriate term used to describe the first group of Caribbean inhabitants is known as the Neo Indians. It was quite surprising to me to know that there are no such things as the Caribs and Arawaks as I was taught in CAPE Caribbean Studies. I also learned that the first group of slaves were not the Africans but in fact the whites. These new perspectives were just to name a few of the things I learned. A copious amount of information was gained from this course. Not only did it educate me, increased my awareness about what really happened in the region and as a result, I feel more self aware.
