• They wanted to see who was bigger and better

• This sparked arguments and fights for who was better

• The bigger the arms got the angrier the leaders got

• The armies became stronger and war broke out

• Allied powers- France, Russia, Great Britain

• Italy joined them in 1915 after leaving the central powers

• France, Russia, GB were known as the Triple Entente

• Germany and Austria-Hungary were known as the Central Powers

• Russia promised to support Serbia

• Caused tension in Europe

• Everybody was competing for territories

• National pride caused them to take over each other

• Wanted to protect themselves in the war

• Due to nationalism some countries became unstable

• (Austria-Hungary) with the the slavs, because the slavs wanted to
• break away from Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary took this as a threat.

2. The sinking of the Sussex. -again German U-boats shot torpedo's at the Sussex {a french passenger line}

3. The Zimmermann note. -the Zimmermann note was a telegram sent from Germany to Mexico to form an alliance and help take back states that the U.S. took from them in the Mexican-American war.

2. The Espionage act of 1917 and the Sedition act of 1918 -these acts restricted free speech and allowed the government to arrest opponents of war.

3. The Selective Service Act -the act required men between the ages of 21 and 30 to be registered to be drafted

4. The War Industries Board -they oversaw the production and distribution of steel, copper, cement, and rubber

5. The Food Administration -they worked to increase food supplies for the troops

6. National War Labor Board -the board helped workers and management avoid strikes and reach agreements

7. Liberty Bonds -people were giving investments in Liberty Bonds.

8. Propaganda -people were setting up propaganda for influences.
