The Kurd's Genocide occurred because the Kurd's did not get what they wanted regarding a nation and other tights like that, causing them to revolt against Iraq. Iraq then ended the revolution by causing a genocide against the Kurdish people. The genocide occurred in parts of Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria. This genocide has occurred over the last several decades starting after World War 1 when the Kurd's lost their nation when dividing up the middle east. This genocide was in its prime for around 3 years(1986-1989) but it is over now.

How did the Kurd's Genocide impact Iraq?

The Kurd's Genocide impacted Iraq by destroying homes and land, killing a massive number of people and innocent civilians, and by having their leader be caught up in a trial. According to the book by Heather Wagner, ""On that date, a formation of Iraqi war planes targeted 13 towns and villages, dropping lethal loads of mustard gas on the helpless population below. By the end of the month, some 30 towns had been similarly targeted, and by the middle of the year, Iraqi planes were dropping chemical weapons on their targets on a daily basis." The Kurdish Genocide impacted Iraq by having many of its villages and towns destroyed by chemical warfare. In her article on ABC-CLIO, Nancy Stockdale argues, "Officially, at least 500,000 people were killed in the lengthy conflict (including some 100,000 Iraqi Kurd's targeted by Hussein's government under the pretext that they were sympathetic to Iran). Unofficial estimates have reached as high as 2 million; many soldiers were conscripted and killed without records, while the war of the cities killed countless civilians." This evidence shows that the Kurd's Genocide impacted Iraq by showing how many people died in the conflict. The article on ABC-CLIO, The Trial of Saddam Hussein, states, "Meanwhile, on August 21, 2006 a second trial had begun on charges that Hussein had committed genocide and other atrocities by ordering the systematic extermination of northern Iraqi Kurd's during 1987-1988, resulting in as many as 180,000 deaths." The Kurd's Genocide impacted Iraq by having their leader Saddam Hussein caught up in a trial, as shown in this article.

Why were the Kurd's targeted?

The Kurd's were targeted because they repeatedly tried to gain independence, they revolted and tried to overthrow the Iraqi government, and because Saddam Hussein thought that the Kurd's were siding with Iran in the Iraq-Iran War. The article of Britannica, "Kurd's", argues, "The Kurd's have repeatedly tried to gain independence. They have fought the Sumerians, Assyrians, Persians, Mongols, European crusaders, and Turks. One of their great leaders was Saladin (see Saladin). Since World War I, Turkey, Iran, and Iraq have put down many major Kurdish uprisings." The Kurd's are targeted because they repeatedly try to gain independence and revolt against Iraq. The same article from Britannica, suggest's, "Following the 1979 revolution in Iran there was severe fighting between government forces and Kurd's demanding political and cultural autonomy (see Iran). A brutal resettlement program by Iraq’s government in 1988 drove 1.5 million Kurd's from their homes. The short Persian Gulf War of 1991 seemed to offer the Kurd's hope; but though Iraq was defeated, its rulers remained in power. They put down a Kurdish revolt, forcing more than 1 million Kurd's to flee northward into Turkey or eastward into Iran." The Kurd's were targeted because they would have very big revolutions and it would cause a lot of warfare and death. The article on ABC-CLIO, "Iraqi Use of Chemical Weapons in the Iran-Iraq War.", by Andrew G. Helms, states, "Meanwhile, during 1988, Iraqi forces used chemical weapons against Iraqi Kurd's. The results were devastating. Hussein justified these attacks because he believed many Kurd's were siding with Iran. He also falsely claimed that the attack had been intended to strike Iranian troops. Perhaps the worst attack occurred on March 16, 1988, in Halabja, Iraq. There Iraqi chemical weapons killed as many as 5,000 Kurd's and injured another 7,000–10,000 people." The Kurd's were targeted because the Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, thought that the Kurdish population was siding with Iran in the Iraq-Iran War, leading him to target the Kurd's.
