I take a mindful walk almost every day along the Aitken creek located in Craigieburn from Aitken boulevard, which is surrounded with eucalyptus trees, grasses lining on the side of small creek, ducks, birds and many more creatures. After going through this unit, I have felt that engaging my senses with natural environment is powerful as it boosts my wellbeing, slows down my mind and increases concentration, I was walking on gravel road when I heard wind, leaves, bird sounds, water sounds, duck sound, noticed swaying trees, little flowers on the bush, white clouds floating around in the blue sky, waves in water and smelt flowers and pleasant fragrance of soil after rain. I captured all sounds in the video. I touched soft leaves, pebbles, sticks, and drank water tap in the park. I spend hours there with my children to enhance their learning and to encourage them to actively participate to dip themselves in the environment around them. According to Reggio Emilia, the learning environment is the “third teacher” in early childhood education and plays an important role in making learning meaningful. I am inspired to include natural materials in ECE and encourage children to spend more time in nature to practice engaging senses to enhance their observational skills and deep connections with nature. This experience has strengthened my dedication to create an environment of attentive listening in the early childhood setting and inspired to engage children in mindfulness activities like simply sit silently, look at and listen to the environment like bird sound, music that air and leaves make, sounds of flowing water, feeling air touching our body or walking bare feet to feel grass, water, or dirt. I enjoyed musical sounds of birds, ducks, water, and rustling leaves which made me to feel happy, relaxed and stress free and Mr. Victor Wooten’s video reminded me that music is a language that is not taught, it comes naturally out us and there is nothing wrong or right way to sing and we all can sing without instruments. I am motivated to immerse children in calm natural music during group time and encourage them to practice singing natural sounds without judging them. In the environment, trees were swaying in the wind, ducks were swimming in water waves and clouds were moving. Birds flapped their wings and began to fly in the sky. It reminded me Lake Cowal Bird Dance - Uncle Winnie video when dancers swing their arms and loosen their body to dance. Dancing promotes physical well-being and emotional abilities. It promotes my thoughts to include activities for children in ECE like practicing lake Cowal bird dance and duck dance, Swimming in water, following clouds, throwing pebbles into water, listening that sound, and creating waves and observing movement of waves, walking bare feet in dried leaves and listen to that sound deeply(According to Pauline Oliveros and Murray Schafer, deep listening involves actively engaging with and interpreting the sounds you hear). I have observed that colour of leaves appears golden from green when sunlight is reflected reminds me Mutton bird dance video that how light radiations changes the colour of their body and as sunlight passes through leaves it forms shadows on the ground and shadows keeps moving time to time as the angle of light changes inspires me to learn from environmental facts and bring that environment into ECE. Reggio Emilia’s book of hundred languages considered the same concept in the classroom by sticking paper bird on the glass and recorded children’s reflections, when children noticed the shadow of bird is kept changing and children used many strategies to catch that shadow. For imaginary play, children can use falling leaves, sticks, mud, flowers, water etc. and feeding ducks can be pretended like feeding babies, birds, butterflies as family members.

I have analysed listening to natural sounds/music, movements foster our relations with nature which has powerful effect on health. Spending more time outside, experimenting with natural materials/processes will have a healing effect and cultivate a sense of inner harmony. Natural materials are easy to affordable and develops range of skills. It reminds me my childhood my childhood days that I spent in climbing trees, playing in the mud, farm and taking bath in cool fresh water of tube well. In my emerging practice, I’ll facilitate children’s learning by letting them to explore freely every bit of nature, the way they want. Wilson, R. (2018). Nature and young children reflect the endless benefits for children including physical fitness, brain development, emotional wellbeing, strengthening social bonds and improves behavior problems and makes children understand that they are part of nature and children will have a positive attitude towards nature.
