My concern would be the students who already do not work at home. If they have not done the prep at home wouldn't it become double the owork in class to catch them up?

It is not something I would begin in September. I want to get to know my students first. It might be too frustrating or overwhelming for them to start teaching and learning new concepts on their own at home. They are adjusting to the middle school and the new environment. They are just learning how to handle a Chrome book and the responsibilities of having it all the time. At 9 and 10 years old, they really need more guidance and classroom instruction. However, I would like to try it mid-year.

A good balance is a beautiful thing. For me, as a teacher I find the technology incredible for allowing for more individualized instruction but still feel there may be times when whole group is necessary - beginning of year, re teaching, etc. The group of kids dictate - may benefit from slightly different
approaches but overall getting to know students better and more time addressing their individual concerns is priceless.

More teacher/student time to reteach/solve issues to be sure that each student truly masters the concept.

We tried, but we realized it is better to start flipping a bit later in the year. In September, the students need to get to know you and your personality to gain that connection and do develop a love of your subject. In addition, you need time to observe the students as you teach a group lesson to discover their learning styles and what they need to stay engaged in a lesson.

I think this would be a great way for students to become more accountable with regards to their learning.

Thoughts: Even if you don't start the year with the actual flipping, having the lesson videos is great. I didn't post more than the first 4 lessons since we stopped flipping, and then discovered that the students were upset that they weren't available to look back at when completing homework. Interestingly, many of those complaints came from students with the shortest attention spans during the lesson. While this makes sense since they didn't follow the lesson in class, I was happy to realize that they actually wanted to go back and watch how to do it in their own time.

Also, I highly recommend having them start watching the lessons and completing the lesson worksheets in class for a good week or 2 before you start the actual flip. Many students really need to be taught how to properly follow along with the flipped video.

Doceri is my favorite app for creating flipped lesson videos. I am not at all computer literate! Doceri is just like using Active Inspire. If I can do it, anyone who uses their Promethian as a blackboard in the classroom can do it. It's very simple.

I think the whole idea of flipping the class is interesting and can definitely be utilized in a math classroom. Students can get an initial understanding of the topic at home, then come to class ready to try applying the math concepts.

I also like how it "frees up" the teacher and allows him/her to pull small groups and check in with students while they work.

I agree with most of these points. Students do not always have easy access to wifi at home. There are also extenuating circumstances which makes concentration during homework difficult for many of my students, so I would have to plan a separate in class lesson for them. Additionally, it seems like there will be a significant amount of time involved in the creation of these lessons.

I think that the idea is a great one! An introduction to a topic at home can leave time to explore and clarify in class!

It did work very well with our Physics classes at the high school. The nature of the physics curriculum and the nature of the students who take physics just lent itself to being successful. My bio and earth science teachers were concerned that because of the nature of all the facts involved students would not be as successful.
