LMS delivered courses are expected to become more popular among both distance learning and traditional courses over the next ten years. Research suggests that the online learning population will take up 14% more of all courses offered in higher education within the next decade. Over the last decade, content tools have evolved into modern instructional tool boxes that focus on student collaboration and reflection. A growing concern is that the increasing enrollment numbers could affect the quality of education because methodology differences are shown to exist between on-campus and online courses.

An educator's advanced technical comprehension of the Learning Management System (LMS) tools and methods provides a better online classroom. Online course instruction platforms feature a variety of document sharing, media, and collaborative tools that need technical familiarity. Teachers providing online course instruction in LMS settings also can benefit from both technical familiarity and advancements in online course designs and delivery methodologies that focus on student collaboration and content reflection. Online courses continue to incorporate themselves further into higher education. There is a need to establish working protocols for both students and faculty. This literature review focuses on subjects such as online technology skills required to use LMS's and the benefit of modern online teaching methodologies. Distance learning teachers and students could benefit from an increased understanding of using LMS technologies more effectively. Also, teachers could provide a more thorough and favorable learning experience through improved knowledge of modern best practices in online distance education.

The literature review focuses on teaching methods used in online courses that use Learning Management Systems. With respect to methodology, the review was broken into two segments: (1) Online Pedagogy and (2) Online Epistemology. However, there is a lack of literature on the latter, the connection of using epistemological disciplines in an online environment. More research would be needed to assess the current state of higher education's collective disciplines, origins, nature, methods, validity, scope, limitations, and theory of knowledge regarding online instruction.
