An iceberg is just a peak that you see, the fact is that there are more than what you can see on the surface. Just like how our behaviour affects a child more than what you can see on the outside.

The symbol of an iceberg because it’s cold, sharp and icy but it can be melted. When our child is being cold, sharp and icy, we need to try to melt them. All of us have had that experience of seeing our child go from being really harsh and angry to tears and being more soft – this is what we need to try to help them to do.

We see an iceberg floating above the water. What we see on the surface does not depict their thoughts and mindset. Whatever we see on the surface does not interpret the full picture for us to understand. It might be something small to the adults but it might mean something big to others. We might assume that it is a small matter and it should not affect or cause us to react a certain way but it might be a major matter to the child from their perspective and it meant a lot to them or it really affects their emotions and feelings. We need to understand children’s behaviour by talking to them, observing them, listening to their sharing, watching their reactions, and being there for them to truly understand how they are feeling and why they are behaving a certain way. We won’t be able to fully understand children based on one scenario or incident unless we observe them for a period of time, communicate with them, bond with them for them to open up to us and share their inner thoughts with us, then can we truly try our best to understand the children.

It is an iceberg.
The iceberg is like children's behaviour. You must look beyond what is on the surface level, if we want to understand them and see what they see. We only see things from the peak of the iceberg, but we should make the effort to understand their motives and emotions.

1. As an early childhood educator, we cannot simply make a assumptions by the outlook of the child without finding out more.

2. There could be various reasons that constitute the certain behaviour for example, loss of family members, abuse, siblings rival, malnutrition, excessive screen time, uninvolved parenting style.

3. Iceberg analogy is a common one used to show visible factors or effects about water and invisible factors and causes below water.
