When looking at Hanks' accent, it is made clear by watching interviews etc, that Tom possesses a standard American accent. However, the tone of his voice distinguishes this because the way he speaks is very nasal. His voice sits higher, which makes his voice less deep. Most of his sounds are formed in his nasal cavity which means that this could make him les threatening to people. This allows people to identify him easily. Accent links to phonology, the way that he speaks relates to prosodic choices-intonation. Also, Hanks has an innate ability to adapt his voice and accent depending on the character that he is playing. If looking at the character of Forrest Gump, he has a very distinct southern accent and Hanks embraces that perfectly, for example the use of the word 'Jenny' he elongates the 'e' which also nearly makes it a diphthong . In terms of social identity, Hanks is perceived to be amiable and congenial (meaning friendly, pleasant and someone who as similar qualities to oneself). I think that the fact he has children makes him approachable to many other people as well as young children, this means that he becomes a very positive figure in society.

In terms of lexis Tom Hanks uses many different techniques. For example' A God died today. Don Rickles, we did not want to ever lose you. Never. Hanx' The use of the metaphor 'God' shows that Tom Hanks thought that he was more than just human and that he had the influence, praise and was almost worshiped by many people because of his work in comedy over the years. Also, the use of the proper noun 'Don Rickles' is effective because it shows Hanks's followers who he is grieving about. Personal pronouns which also links to the framework of grammar are also used 'we' shows unity and that he feels that the world loved him and didn't want to let him go. In terms of theories Tom Hanks firstly uses the influential power theory this is because
