1. When I was a young child, my parents did not expect anything from me. As the years passed by, I started to notice some pressure from my parents. My mom often talks about her career as a software engineer and how it is profitable job and very enjoyable. She started to push me toward activities involving engineering, but in truth, I am not a fan of engineering. In my opinion, parents should pressure kids onto a certain extent, I don’t like the idea of parents controlling their child’s life because I feel the child will find their path eventually.

2. Our society is very confirmed. You have to have something that will make you not “pop out” from the crowd. If you aren’t “part of the trend” you may be pushed away and be called a freak. I, personally, respect those who aren’t conformed into society, because it takes alot of confidence to step out of the shell. The remaining people are probably scared of stepping out. Scared of being an outcast of society.

“All one can really leave one’s children is what’s inside their heads. Education, in other words, and not earthly possessions, is the ultimate legacy, the only thing that can be taken away.” A quote by Dr. Wernher von Brawn.. Hickman probably chose this quote to explain the importance of education. In the book, Hickman is shown with an interest in things such as reading while his older brother is more interested in sports. Hickman probably wanted to point out the influence of a parent’s mind to their children’s future. He says education is the one thing that can’t be taken away. Saying the influence of education will stay with a child than other things.
2. Hickman also gives a quote by Miss Freida Joy Riley. This quotes summaraizes to read a book you must have courage to understand the book. I assume since his father’s “favorite” son is Hawkin’s older brother, Hawkin’s confidence detriotated during the years. Maybe in the later chapters, Hawkin regains his confidence as he pursues his dream through his love of books.

Literary Response 2: Sonny to Family

Sonny’s relationship with his family is distant compared to other families of Coalwood. Sonny’s relationship with his family is presented in every chapter. In the book, Sonny tries to be optimistic about his family but is instead to be pessimistic. Though Sonny clearly shows great interest in rockets, his father is against this idea, thinking that Sonny is only smart to work in the mines. But as Sonny builds his first rocket and accidentally blows up his mother’s fence, he starts to question his relationship with his father. During a conversation his mother, Sonny questions his mother, ““Why doesn’t Dad like me?”... “He’s never had much time to think about you one way or the other”... “I knew Dad thought about Jim all the time”....” (Hawkins 43). In this passage, Sonny questions his father’s love for him. Sonny believes that his father doesn’t love him, but only Jim, his older brother. Parents should be a child’s haven, someone that the child could trust and feel that he or she is loved. But in Sonny’s case, Sonny’s fatherly haven is corrupted and gone. For his mother, she is pained to hear one of her sons saying that her husband, their dad doesn’t love them. Sonny’s mother tries to fill in the missing spaces that Sonny’s father is supposed to be in. For example, she tries to fill in the strictness of a father. His mother tries her best to support Sonny, giving him chances, and a safe haven. Sonny’s relationship with his mother is strong, but on the other hand, his mother and father’s relationship seems to be strained. As Sonny enters into highschool and becomes mature, Sonny notices very little things that pop out. While putting himself to sleep, Sonny explains,“ I heard her walk back to her bed and the sound of her mattress taking her weight. I heard Dad’s bedroom door close. I guess I was starting to grow up, because for the first time I understood at least a little about loneliness and frustration that seemed to fill our house” (119). Though this scene seems to be a minor little scene, it gives a clear view of how his parents’ relationship is strained away. Many couples, especially married, share their bed symbolizing trust, sharing, and security in couples. Sonny’s parents are indeed married but seem to not even try to sleep next to each other, rather apart. Sonny’s mature teenage mind understands how his family is so distant to each other. He describes that his family is lonely and frustrating. The separate beds are a symbolism of his family. Families should feel trust and secured in each other, but like the beds they are separated. Lonely because they have no one to really connect to. His family may feel frustrated because they are confused of what to do. Sonny gives little stories such as this to give a glimpse of family bond. As Sonny’s mind matures during the years, Sonny understands the distant relationship with each family member.
